Hmmm. Right now I'm a library slave monkey page. Which basically involves putting books away where they're supposed to go, covering new books, and telling people to go see the reference librarian. Sometimes I'm lucky and gets to work on the desk.
Before that I was a candy-counter girl. Awesome job, my my boss... er, wasn't so great. Ah well, I got to taste all the homemade chocolates and ice cream!
Buuut.... as for what I'm going to study next year? I'll be mostly a biology major, but I'm going for a focus in plant sciences. Not a real major at Smith, but there's an open cirriculum so I can create my own major. They also have a 12-week internship to the Royal Gardens at Kew that I REALLY want to go to!
Uh... I rambled, yes? Sorry, a lot of this is on my mind right now, being so close to graduating and whatnot.

Over the summer, I'm getting a part time job at a metaphysical shop down the road... After that, I'm working towards being a professional author, and possibly production designer. I'm also currently studying psychology... Fear in particular. It fascinates me. Oh for the love of... I have WAY too much in comman with Mister Crane!

I'm starting on an art area in a state college. Over the summer I hire out my hands and soul to fast food conglomerates.

Currently, I do the following for a living: go to school as an 8th grader, do chores aound the house for $10 a week, do art commissions for my friends, write stories as a hobby, draw(of course), and I'm a marine biologist in training. One day, I hope to be a marine biologist, an author, editor, and illistrator, and a webcomic artist in my spare time. Oh, and I ring handbells, I'll probably be doing some of that when I'm older. I also would like to pursue playing dumset. Yes, I know I'm being rather ambitious for a 14 year old, I'm just that kind of person.

Erm, I think I'll take whatever job I can get at first (I can do guy voices too-oo), and then get more picky. If I make it. What I'd like to do first though, like a summer job, is work as the cosplay girl at anime pavilion I'd get to dress up in a cosplay outfit, and talk to people about anime all day! FunFunFun! Dundee: Wow, if you're a marine biologist, and author, and editor, and an illustrator, I doubt you'll have much spare time O.o

Well I am a Biologist with a focus on Ecology. My most recent project included six months total studying exploding ants in a pristine tropical rainforest in Borneo. I would like to eventually go to graduate school and do more field research preferably on some large carnivore in a desert environment. Currently I have decided to take a hiatus on my life by chilling in Japan and working as an English teacher. This plan, however, is failing due to me being unemployed for three months despite successfully obtaining a three year long term resident visa. (Thats a fancy way of saying I am an unemployed bum. ) Daggertooth

Exploding...ants?

Post by Daggertooth on Mar 16, 2006 10:12:55 GMT -5
Yup. These ants are Camponotus in the Cylindricus complex. They have Hypertrophied mandibular glands that extend to the back of the Gaster. These Glands are filled with a chemical goo consisting of some toxic chemicals and sugars. The toxic chemicals are quite varied depending on the species and act as an irritant while the sugars act like a fast drying glue. (I personally discovered that when a few hundred ants worth of goo is applied to your thumb you get a really nasty and really deep chemical burn.) When threatened these ants will charge the enemy, wrap around them, then either rupture the Mandibular gland through the gaster, exude goo through the mouth, or both. The end result is typically an enemy with a dead ant glued to it and its legs glued together, effectively immobilizing it and thus killing it. Whew, thatĀfs that in a nutshell. Daggertooth i17.photobucket.com/albums/b87/Daggertooth/4x17Fingersequence.jpgNot my thumb, but forfinger. Times like these I am glad I'm not trying to figure out the properties of radioactive material or Murcury or something.

Ooh, your field is one I'm interested in, Daggertooth. ^^ I love studying animals and wouldn't mind spending a ton of time in the wild with them (except for the lack of internet... I'm hopelessly addicted) How much time did you spend in school? Was it hard? If it's too much, that's alright, you don't need to answer. ...Insects with chemical defenses are cool. That second picture looks really neat, though painful. (I know, I'm weird, but I like the picture.)

Well so far I have only gotten a four year bachelor Degree in Biology. This project was more for experience than anything else and I did not get paid for it. To be able to do this as a career you most likely would need a PhD which is typically a six year program after the initial BS.
Best bet is to get good grades and pick classes specific to your field of study. And always look for opportunities for research especially during the summer. Professors are always looking for people to do work with them. Sometimes they are willing to pay you, sometimes you will need to volunteer, either way you will get experience. Also, look for scholarships specific for research. I got an undergraduate scholarship for my first trip to Brunei. I learned later that the next year nobody tried for that same scholarship. Meaning if anyone went for it they would have gotten it by default.

Hey, neato, there's another Page here! OK, I'm actually an ex-page, but I still know my way 'round the DDS pretty well... I had to quit that job, much to my sadness, because I headed off to school, where I'm currently studying for a Masters of Divinity... Which'll take awhile. I got a new job working at the school's gym, which involves everything from making milkshakes to cleaning toilets to running a mini-zamboni! But rarely at the same time.
