Whoo, you wanna talk expensive, that's the ticket right there, heh.
I think improved graphics are much more than just eye candy, just as the in-depth (and as some would say, overly in-depth) descriptions of Middle Earth that Tolkien gives us are far more than some British dude filling up paper, trying to sound impressive. Graphics help immerse us in a story. If we look at a character that (apparently) is trying to look real, but only looks like a blotchy, polygony monstrosity that may or may not actually have a torso, it shatters our ability to suspend disbelief. Thankfully, not all games set themselves up to require such detail. The much talked about Star Ocean 2 has relatively un-detailed sprites, and though it does provide spiffy anime portraits of all the main characters, for the most part the graphics ain't that good. But for that style of game, it works out beautifully. The story is weaved in such a way so as to give the player enough to live without the fully rendered mumbo-jumbo that some games need. Personally, I think the PS3 will not provide the proper medium for games like Star Ocean 2, or other equally endearing titles. However, it will provide the perfect platform for cinematic works of art, like MGS4. In that spiffy Spore video in the Plugs board, the designer (name's slipping my mind, sorry) said that games are headed in the direction of the player making and then playing the story. I think he's half right. Some games are headed that way, and I think platforms like the Wii will be great for that style of game. But I think that there is still plenty of space for the game designer to make the story, and make it beautiful, and then let us, the players, come along on their ride. The PS3 will help bring us closer to fully realizing just how deep into these interactive fantasies we can let ourselves be taken.
Personally, I'm looking forward to them both. Heh, doubt if I will (or can) get both, but I think they'll both be great systems.

What you've explained is that the PS3 can run longer games with better graphics. But the real question is, does that make it fun? You really surprise me. I mean we are talking about the specs of a system that your content to trash and now you want to talk about the entertainment value of its games? Thats apples and oranges my friend. One thing is the specs of a system the other about the subjectively perceived entertainment value of the various designers. Now longer game play with greater graphics is not the only thing going for the PS3. But I'll tell you that it is a great selling point especially if the various Role playing games use up those discs space to their fullest. I personally would love a Star Ocean quality RPG with the quality graphics proposed and the length of time it would take to beat. Of course alone longer game play and better graphics will not hold its own. Much like a short games with fantastic gameplay wont hold their own, unless you don't have the attention span that lasts a typical TV show. Two great examples would be Fable and Halo 2 for X-box. Both had great gameplay and both were disappointingly short. Fable could be beaten in about an 8 hour sit down and Halo 2 seemed over before you had time to get into the story. The graphics were far above average too. But that really didn't matter as much if I was done playing with it in a day or two. If it's fun, imaginative or has an involving story I'm sold. Well each person values different aspects of a game differently. Personally I would like to see a balance on the different specs. For instance I would not care for a game that was fun, imaginative, and involved a story that ran only stickfigures. You might love that. I personally find graphics as an important part of a game. Not the number one aspect, but it helps. With designers that make things like star ocean and final fantasy I think its safe to say that the games taking advantage of the PS3's longer game play and superior graphics will be more than eye candy. Personally, if you want a gaming system that is all about superior graphics and sound I've got the perfect system for you. It's called the gaming computer. But I suppose I shouldn't force my opinion on others. We like what we like and that's it. Funny how you pooh pooh a system with disinformation and propaganda and when I correct you and explain a few places where it is superior you suddenly start stressing those as if they are its only selling points and start decrying about how those don't matter. But whatever, if your talking getting a PC just for games then you probably have no problem with the price of the PS3 either. The price probably being its only real hurting point. Now if the 360 gets longer games I might be nicer to it. I've got to say that I was really dissapointed in Fable. So much potential and it flops. The game play was solid but there was very little character development and diversity. And like I said, over in a minute. Thats only one game and the developers fault, but time and time again X-box dissapointed me. As they say, a system is only as good as its games and X-box still lags behind the others in quality games. I typicaly consider Nintendo as a thing to put flashing pictures infront of little kids. Thats not saying its a bad system. Just with its main characters being pokemon, mario, and kirby you can tell exactly where they are marketing to. And a very important market that they will be rewarded greatly for playing directly at. Now nintendo does have Smashbrothers which is greatly entertaig and it does have Zelda. Possibly the only reasons I would ever think of getting the system. However, as far as good quality RPG's that have entertained me for hours I would still go with the PS3. I know the quality of games it has access to in the PS2 and PS and I know the games still to come out for the PS2 will be highly anticipated. Flag, I think your right...well, for the most part. I actually think they can make a great Star Ocean game with this format. A few discs of those 45 gig discs with faster gameplay, greater graphics, and hopefully features added from the quality of Star Ocean 2 and 3. Now that would be great. I do think they can pull it off if they don't rush it through development. As far as controlers are conserned, I am a little dissapointed that Sony didn't try to redesign it to something more comfortable. The Wii's controller is interesting, I would actualy have to try it to say anything. X-box's controler was a battleaxe. One I critisized heavily untill I got really used to it. It actualy became the controller I prefered. Its real hard going back to the playstation after you get used to the X-box controller I'll tell you what. The most comfortable controller I have ever held was the one for Sega Satern. A pitty about that system. Daggertooth

stonjestrike, when did Daggerever say he wouldn't play games that are short? Or games that don't have really good graphics? What he was saying, i believe, was that these things enhance the gameplay, and make it more fun. Also, youi're getting just the tiniest bit irate, and i really don't want to see a discusion about games disolve into a flame war. And you should remember that not everyone is going to agree with you. I, for one, am not going to give the Wii or the 360 a second look, but that is simply becasue I prefer the PS systems.

And you have yet to show me an example of where he is flaming you. I am greatly interested to see your reasoning behind that train of thought.

..just keep in mind that just because you feel it is inferior, doesn't mean everyone does. MY PS2 has never crashed on me or lagged, while the gamecube I've played has before. Now, this might just be an isolated case, but, for me, personally, that makes the Gamecune the inferior console.

While it is true that the length of games can sometimes be very disappointing, but why should that stop you from playing them? Longer games is defiantly a strong point but if you refuse to play a short game then you're limiting your gameplay even more. Take one of my favopurite games for example, GUN. GUN had one of the best storys I ever heard and a fun unique control scheme. But unforteunatly, it was short. It would have been great if it was longer but to not play it at all would have been way worse. Sure, but like Wolfchild said I'm not advocating not playing any game less than a certain length. My examples of short games that disappointed should have made that clear enough. The longer game part is more than eye candy but you have to admit, graphics technically are eye candy. The length of a game and the graphics it sports are actually solid game features. They are things that actually matter to a game that, when taken away, not only make the game less visually appealing but also lesson the games actual play value. You might as well be saying that good game play is eye candy with the way you are tossing that around. Now with the way you've been reading what I say I suppose I need to add the disclaimer that I'm not saying graphics and length are the only selling features of a game. If you would just give games with bad graphics a try, you might realize how many good games there are. And think of how many things there are with no graphics. Novels, text adventures, D&D, I take it your not a fan of them. I personally love them. lol, I love this. Is this where I state all the things with good graphics and advise you to try them. So much to mention. Heck I can even say real life since graphics is simply meant to make things more real. "I take it your not a fan of them. I personally love them." Only hurting point? How about it's lack of a good online service or anything revoloutionary? I admit it's a big change from the PS2, but really, it's just a big expansion pack for it. The only thing that I found intresting was the seven player feature. You admit that it is a big change from the PS2 and then say its just a big expansion? I'm torn whether or not to list a few things, repeat what I've already said, or to just simply compare the Wii to the original Nintendo. Oblivion anyone? The one with 2000+ hour gaming? Congratulations you know of one game. You could have also mentioned several star wars games and I would have accepted Halo as well. Probably half a dozen other games out there. Not the point. I find the quality of games made for that type of gameplay lacking in the X-box. How many times have I heard that one before? Nintendo systems are not just about those characters. You know how many Mature games are for it? And if you think the Wii is going to be for kids then you've never heard of the game Red Steel. The thing that makes them different is they don't market for one age group. They market for everyone. Go watch some videos of the Wii. You'll be impressed. You've heard it before because it is largely true. But I better not dwell on that as you'll take offense. Seems that your so infatuated with the Wii that any criticism of it is taken as Flame or personal insult. You probably shouldn't discuss this at all if thats how you really are. But I digress, I never said that those characters are the only ones for Nintendo, however Nintendo has milked it hard and pushed that as one of their major marketing campaigns. They are strongly targeting kids and rightly so. Do they have games for adults? Yes, and a few good ones. That does not change where they have invested the most money into. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for the 360 and Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers for the Wii. Have fun. So now your just going to list a few good games and say thats why a system is superior? There are some games that make a system. Theres a reason X-box was nicknamed the halo box. Still mentioning just a few games is not very effective for discussion. Have fun. He's flaming me. I defend myself. The only thing I'm flaming is the PS3. Stonestrike, you don't even know what flaming is. My opinion is disinformation and propaganda to him. I could come up with so many flaws in what he said... And I can quote you saying that the PS3 is "a tiny expansion" on the PS2. Repeatedly saying its screwed with the only reasoning being the "proof" which you later claimed as a joke. Even as a joke it was propaganda. And "It has nothing going for it other than graphics" Which despite your opinion on the value of graphics is incorrect. Disinformation and Propaganda. But I'm sure if you point out the things you said that are correct you can redeem yourself. Afterall, if I say you are using disinformation and propaganda that means that everything you say is disinformation and propaganda...right? Just like valuing graphics means I am against anything without graphics and that liking long games means I don't play short games. Where's the rule against flaming an inanimate object? He also flamed an inanimate object by the way. Oh no, I said that the Wii was less than the perfect system out there. I must be flaming it. Right....this is your definition of Flame in action. Am I to understand that I have to agree with you or else I am flaming? On several ocassions he has said that what I'm saying is just nonsense. I do not really consider this flaming, but it's way closer to flaming then anything I've said to him. Unrelated to the subject at hand I really have a thing against people who think Nintendo is kiddie. You apparently have something against anyone who doesn't think Nintendo is the best. I mean I know your biased but sheesh, the thing doesn't walk on water. I said they cater to kids and target them as a strong market. Thats fact and a very good play. If that offends you then maybe you shouldn't take part in discussions like this until you grow up a little. Look I really don't like to argue. I get really pissed off and it gets hard not to insult. One reason is that I've noticed PS2 lags a lot and crashes a lot while my gamecube has never given me trouble, but people still think the PS2 is better. It just makes no sense. Why do people like an enferior system better? I'll just say "sample size" and leave this at that. Daggertooth

Fine, then I'll respond to it, stonestrike. First of all, with the way you have presented your arguements, you appear very young and unknowledgeable. Ah, boys and their toys. Seriously ya'll, no need to fight. Remember, this is the official game topic. Games are meant for fun. They are also a great leveler, because no matter how big of an ego your skills and knowledge may get you, there is always someone out there waiting with a pin to deflate it. I would strongly suggest that we all do ourselves a favor here and pull the plug ourselves, realize we aren't perfect, realize we don't know everything, realize we may be wrong (at the very least, we may be legitimately wrong in the eyes of someone else), and as such, we ought to let it go. Get back to what we ought to be doing, talking about games.
So does anyone here remember that ol' N64 game, Mischief Makers? It was relatively unknown, but man... That was good times.

Excuse me, but I don't get mad at anyone who doesn't think Nintendo is best. Well now, you certainly haven't demonstrated this have you. I mean your big thing is that I "flamed" Wii. And what was that flame? That the target audience for the Wii are kids. Now I didn't say "just" kids but they are a major marketing ploy. Do you think Nintendo is incorrectly marketing its system? I get mad at those who say it's kiddie. Its the target audience my friend, and a great strategy. They have the most recognizable characters of any system and are best set up to market to kids. I never said its just for kids, infact you are the one who coined the term Kiddie, but I stand by my statement that I typically consider it for kids. It is more than that but it is best situated and only one really marketing to them. If Nintendo's own marketing strategy is what gots you in an uproar perhaps your supporting the wrong system. And a lot of people agree that the Wii is going to be the best. A lot will agree with me too. But then What I said was that Nintendo would have a very strong showing but target a different audience whereas 360 has a good chance at recovering from its debacles in order to face off with the PS3 at its debue. A little more indepth than an informal poll. And the whole "grow up a little" thing is very annoying and shows your personality to a tee. That is flaming. No, its advice. It's telling you that if your getting upset because I disagree with you about how great nintendo is and who its target audience is then you should not participate in the discussion untill you grow up a little. You see its a conditional statement, an if-then if you will, that states that "if" you are getting angry simply due to a difference in opinion "then" you should step out of the discussion and grow up a little. "if" that is not the case and you are not getting upset because of a difference in opinion "then" this statement does not apply to you. If you don't think it is then obviously you don't know the definition of flame. Calling somebody kiddie is flaming. But you called the Wii kiddie and that is an inanimate object so no rules were broken in the least. What I find obvious is that you are a bit emotionally entwined in this conversation to the point that you are not reading what is actually being said and reading what you want just to get insulted. I stated an opinion and you got mad at it despite anything said in support of it. How can you say that I don't know what I'm talking about? You have not presented any facts or specs. All you did was bash a system then change your story slightly when I presented some real facts about the PS3 and 360. Then get angry when I made some assertions about the Wii. You claim to be knowledgeable in gaming, so much so you call yourself the gaming god, but you have not presented me any facts comparing the systems for me to even have the impression that you know what your talking about. Yes you did link me to a few video's, I'll give you that. But mostly just fan based promotionals. What about real specs of the systems? Frankly I think you don't know what your talking about so we are at an impass. Now are you just saying that as a pouty bit of defiance or did you find anything wrong with the specs or comments I actually made? Besides me saying the Wii strongly markets to kids that is. I'm under the impression that it is the former. if you could just stand to back away and perhaps act a little less vain (I do know that's flaming but I don't care anymore) then maybe we can have a non-flaming discussion later. Doubt that. If merely criticizing the Wii is defined as flame by you then I doubt anyone can have a real discussion with you. Am I vain? I presented data and made inferences on that data. If thats what you consider vain...well, maybe you have definition problems with more than just flame and spam. You act like you know everything and everybody else is an idiot to you. It can really look like that when one person presents facts and another one is trying to have a shouting match. I really dislike talking to you so please do not respond to this post. Well you asked ever so politely and I was tempted to comply. But you said somethings and made some claims that required they be addressed. Sorry to disappoint you. The reason I can't display my thoughts correctly is because I'm so mad at him. It's really hard to say what I think when I'm pissed and everytime he posts his arguments is like a knife through my brain. I think this may be a sign that you are a bit too emotionaly invested in this topic. I have tried to present the information strait forwardly and give my opinions on it and you've simply gotten offended and insulted where none was intended. Perhaps this is a sign that you should step out for a breather for a while. Daggertooth Edit: hey Flagg, Missed your post trying to mediate things. Your right of course, though I figure I'll keep this post considering the time it took and that I am trying to mediate and clerify things a little. Course I don't apear to be effective with Stone getting madder and madder with everything I say. *shrug* I've never heard of the game you mentioned.

Ah, 'tis a pity. One of the few N64 games that didn't use the stick. Basically, you're a robot girl (cyborg girl?) on some odd planet, and you have to rescue your maker, some old scientist guy, who has been kidnapped by evil forces! Which you mostly do by picking up your enemies, shaking them, and throwing them at your other enemies. Yeah, shaking, lots and lots of shaking, heh. It's very silly, but actually has some good action to it.

It was a little bit like that, yeah. But Mischief Makers had a much larger puzzle aspect to it, and not every character on the screen is an enemy. For example... img.gamespot.com/gamespot/images/screenshots/0/197950/mischief_screen005.jpgYou can grab onto that springy thing and shake downward, and it'll spring you up. Or you can go over to that fellow on the left and talk to him, since he's friendly. Or you can go over, pick him up, and throw him against the wall, hee hee. It doesn't kill him, and of course, he's still friendly to you no matter how many times you throw him.

Well there is a way to civily discuss the consol wars. Just can't take critisism of your prefered consol so personaly. I'm really not sure why you became as mad as you did. I mean I did say good things about nintendo, some In the same paragraph where you say I am flaming it.
Magick Lorelai, What exactly did you find limiting about Arcanum? With the several different races, multitudes of class enhancements, and choice of technology, magic, or the middle ground I thought the game had lots to offer. A little restrictive on the rout you needed to take, but with the variety of choices you could always manipulate it so that you did very different things.
My first character was a Dwarven technologist. By the late game I had about 20 automatons following me around. Not sure if that would have been enough to win it as my game got deleated shortly before the last leg of the game. I tried a thief but my computer screen had the game way to dark to sneak around at night. I had a mage that won the game, mainly used death and life magic all around. And of course teleportation which made life a lot better than walking around with a technologist.

Yeah well, I guess it was out of frustration. I had gotten into a lot of console arguments recently and was getting fed up. Trust me, usually I argue a lot better then that. Anyway, has anyone played inner space? Oldest game still sold? I downloaded a demo of it yesterday. The way it works is you pick a ship and enter your name. The game will greet you differently according to what time it is. You then actually pick a program on your computer. Yes, an actual program. The enter it and either capture or destroy the icons inside. Ocassionaly you'll meet up with a team mate and/or an enemy. What you do affects your realations with other teams. For instance I'm helpful to team mates and psycopathic to enemies. Here's a link for those who are interested. www.sdispace.com/content/is.htm

Oy, people need to be more careful with rental games. If you look at them they're dirty, smudged and scratched up. What, are they playing frisbee with em'? I have to clean em' three or four times before they actually work in my PS2. Anyway I guess now that my head is clear I should properly explain how the Wii works.
First, the Wii has a unique internet service. Taken from the official website by the way.
And if your wondering how the controller works...
And since you wanted specs, here ya go.
Another interesting feature is the ability to download old games with it.
One last thing, you do not want to be the god of gaming. I spend a freakishly long time playing games each day. And trust me, I'm not kidding when I say freakishly.
Edit: Just so you know, the reason I got mad before is because I had adressed a lot of "Wii suxxorz" topics on other forums which lead me to getting really frusterated and Daggertooth was acting rather patronizing. What was leading him to act that way was probabley how unrational I was acting due to my angry state. We both began insulting each other and then wolfchild came in siding with Daggertooth making the situation worse. Soon the topic was one big flame war.

Out of respect for a few people I've spoken to personally, I'll keep this on topic. However, for the record, I'd like to say that it's under protest. I've noticed that about the ps2 too, however, one slight bug, that happens only once in a great while, and is easily prevented does not make a system inferior. In terms of speed and graphics, the PS2 is stronger than the GC. In both quality and quantity of games, again, PS2. In value to a person outside of game capacity, PS2. Let's face it, it's a versatile system. I use mine as a dvd player, cd player, and both Playstation and PS2 games. GC can't do that. I think that the technology to make a game longer, and more visually appealing, is a big deal, and not just 'eye candy'. I still play my old 8-bit NES system, and enjoy it. But the thought of Sony producing the biggest Final Fantasy game yet, or maybe the production of a collection of classics on a single disc, the technology involved in compressing more information onto a single disc, with better cinematic results really does intrigue me. And as far as the price tag goes, that's been a constant complaint of everyone since the dawn of competative systems. People used to complain about the cost of a genesis (100 bucks if I remember right.) and the new games (20 each, if memory serves.) they complained about the cost of the sega CD, 32x, saturn, N64, playstation, and so on. There's a pretty universal truth to this People will come up with the money. Just look at how well XBOX sold. Look at the lines of anticipating fans waiting for the 360 That being said, a lot of people go for a system because of its reputation in the past. Let us take, for example, sega Genesis had a huge selection of games, was a very stable system and grew into other things. Those other things were abandoned fairly early on for the next big thing. Saturn would've sold well if sega'd really stuck to it, but they left it behind for (rumored) virtual reality. (a few rumors floated around, but they were pretty unsubstantiated.) the dreamcast would have potential even in todays market, (If you haven't seen it, let me just say, it was beautiful.) but sega's reputation for abandoning projects caught it first. People didn't buy it because they were waiting to see what sega would do. why spend 200 on a system if it would be dropped like the others? they were wise to wait. Now why is this relevant in our current discussion? I'm interested in the next gen sony system because of the number, and quality of games sony had in the past. As for the 360, most of what I ever hear about from the XBOX crowd is all their FPS games, and how disappointing fable was (the only game that really caught my attention anyway.) I know sony to stick to their projects and to have good financial backing. I know their reputation for producing more quality than crappy games. I'm a big fan of the RPGs they've released, from FF7,8, and 9 and Legend of Dragoon on PlayStation, to Star Ocean and Xenosaga on PS2. Meanwhile, poor ol nintendo is feeling left out, because.... I have a gamecube, and two games. the game that came with it, and the zelda game, which was not quite as great as I'd hoped. it was a waste of my 60 bucks last year, and is now collecting dust on a shelf.... but hey, if I didn't waste it on that, I'd waste it on something else, right? I'm just not interested in pokemon or mario, I don't really find myself drawn to the current incarnation of the legend of zelda series unless they make something on par with ocarina of time, it's likely I'll continue with that view. and while the party games are nice, I don't have any friends to come over and play them with. (There might be a reason for that, *nudge-nudge*) Ok, who wants the soap box now?
