I thought i'd start a thread on Charby's past. Um... in the second comic in this series. The first one with captain Robert. Was that one supposed to be comical? Or was I supposed to feel bad for Charby? Because when the candle stick appears above Charby's head instead of a light bulb and there is that chibi Charby, and then that plot and then captain Robert says "Charrrrrrrby" and then that last panel was all exclamationy, it seemed kind of humorously intended. But then whats funny about Charby getting abused?
I admit that I laughed. but then I felt bad about it. Captain Robert has a funny hat.

'Captian Robert' isn't exactly the most menacing of pirate names anyway...

Yay, discussion is happening! Glee! ^_^ It's supposed to be a hard mix between the two, like dark comedy. Yeah Capn' Robert is sort of a wimpy name no? (the ship is named Jolly Robert, after a ship in an old Beck the Ferret comic) that's only his formal name though, he does have a more piratey name, they call him Captain Blackheart, Black is his last name. So yes it's supposed to be pity but at the same time you can laugh a little guilty-like. The first version was straight-on comedy though, with a lot of wedgies, shark-games and a bitey parrot. This time around I wanted to focus a bit more on Charby's personal level of the matter, whereas the last version was third person narrative. I just have this ...well i wouldn't call it a "knack" for but I like to inject a little humor into my more depressing comics. Unless I've intended it to be dead serious which is VERY rare, there wil be at least one part in the comic that either made me chuckle or I put it in to cheer things up. The only one I can think of where I didn't put something goofy in there was when Charby had that dream of Vicki's "second" death. That was intentionally supposed to be sad or whatever it was generally decided upon to be. Or I'm just sick to find someone's over-the top melodramatic reaction to their dead lover sort of funny in itself...in comic form that is not in real life! It's horrible in real life I'm sure... Funny thing is, someone once said my comic was far too angsty...I don't think they paid any attention to it at all (this was during the first run long ago actually) Heck if they want to see angst, I'll just take out allll the parts I put in there for a secret laugh (or for anyone who notices the irony or hidden jokes right off) then they will get something very unpleasantly depressing. It's best that they don't test me, for I am evil. Harhar. It will be angst to make their eyes bleed and turn their wardrobe black! Rahahaha! Um, in short: yes the visual puns, corny pirate-speak and slapstick are for laughs, but that is to lighten up the mood for a miserable story that is taking place.

It's like an ultra-violent piratical Lemony Snicket Story (A comparison, not an accusation.) Or Like Ronald Dahl. Amidst pain and agony, there is laughter.. probably more than when things are going well.

Well then you got the reaction that you wanted out of me. I couldnt stop laughing! But I felt guilty about it at the same time.
Oh, nice sound effect for getting kicked in the back by the way. I thought that it was innacurate but this other guy said that it did sound like that, so I got him to kick me in the back to prove him wrong but he proved me wrong! So thats what getting kicked in the back sounds like.

I like CTV humor. It's always kinda dark and violent, but still darn funny. I think we only feel guilty about finding the pirate arc funny (yes, I felt bad about it, too...) because Charby is a character we all know and love. Seeing him get abused is just... different from seeing Random Jerk #12 get gutted.

Yeah, that was my thought. I didnt know if I should be laughing at good ol' Charby's misfortune. Felt bad about not being on his side.

Man...The newest page where Quixoto tears into Chrby's neck.... Woah. My initial, second, third, fourth..ehh, going into about five minutes of reaction and it's still "Woah". I loved the second panel, with his life flashing before his eyes.. along with tears and something that was either blood, drool or snot. Incredible work on that one. I'm still geeking out over it! Just, like, WOAH maaan.....

Exactly my impression. I was struck dumb. I think I was sitting in front of the computer for a good five minutes - mouth hanging open, glazed eyes, drool, the whole bit - just basking in the sheer... wickedness of the page (and I am using "wicked" in all its implied meanings...)

I dunno, I think that goreibblely fantomihead suits it better. A nice mixture of gore, horrible, fantastic, and oh my head, this page is beyond description. Aheheheh... I like making up words.

Dundee, my good woman, you have committed Grammaticide. That word should be taken out and shot. On the other hand, that's the coolest made-up word I have read this month!! Back to the topic, though, I think this page did an amazing job of wrenching the emotions of both shock and terror from me. That's powerful art and storytelling. Amelius, you never fail to amaze.

Nice little segway thing... from flashback to Charby changing into a monster. Very nice. I was able to ward off destructive huggies with this one, but I was digging the bear. I can't draw bears... How did Amy get sogood at bears? (Other then for Munchy... Ignore me being stupid... oh please ignore the rampant stupidity!)

Yes, I thought the bear was extremely well-done. And funny at the same time. The segue at the beginning confused me until I had read the next few panels, then I had one of Charby's 'candle moments'.

Yeah! It looks very realistic! But, I'm not suprised: If there is something draw-able, Amy'll be good at it!

Well, none of us know Charby's whole backstory, but we sure know that grin of his! It means that butt-whooping's on it's way! Hopefully involving a lot of nasty pirates running about and screaming like little girls.

I'm said to have a distinctive 'Zerlocke grin'. I can't do Charby, but I sure can do Zerlocke! *does the grin*

Yes, my dear brother DOES have Zerlock's grin. And we happen to be faar off-topic.
Question for Amelius. Did you use a reference when you drew the bear's mouth? It looks so good~! The 'dental work' was very realistic and I want to know how you did it~!

*tries REALLY hard not to respond to Dundee's comment about tongues, fails, and compromises ^^;* Lookie! I can touch my nose with my tongue! Oh, right. The whole people-on-the-computer-can't-see-me thing.
I love this page! Charby is just soooooo amazing when he's full of revenge! I bet Hexavier wishes he was in the arc so he could get a few blows in, too ^^. I I especially like what he does with the flag. Lemme guess - the predecessor of The Coat!
