Alps?

I was curious about Tony the Alp; I read up recently on Alps, and nowhere did I see about any of them storing magic in their hats. Is this something the author added on, or did they get their information from somewhere else?
Thanks in advance. <3

*tacklepounces* HIIIIII sister'sfriend! Ha, I knew I'd see you on here eventually. Oh, um, the hat. I'm not sure about that one, youse'll have to wait for Amelius. I think she kinda stuck that in there because of all the lore saying that they have hats in all their forms. I mean, really, why else would they wear a hat all the time?

That's where I first heard about 'em, but I rummaged through the net for a bit scrounging up info (the Encyclopedia of Things That Never Were was dissapointingly lacking in the alp department). I've gotten quite a few conflicting reports, though.

Yeah, looking for Alp info on the net is a pain in the butt, especially since a lot of it needs to be translated to understand it clearly. Indeed sources conflict so Tonius is a mishmash of all the things I liked in what I read, and most importantly the ones that had things in common. A few of them said something about an "evil eye that it has to protect" too, but I'm not sure how to fit that one in... but anyhow about the hat thing, both the books I read mentioned that Alps were linked to werewolves at times due to their shapeshifting ability, particularly preferring a "lecherous demonic dog". But whatever form they took, they still wore the hat in every manifestation (this is what hooked me into the character idea, the thought of hatted animals trying to be "sneaky") I tried looking it up online but only one document matched up to it, and it appeared to be on a site run by a student or something, not an entirely proffessional looking site that is to say. Also, Alps are linked in their pasts to Knockers, wich are friendly elfin types that live in mine shafts. I do believe they are much like Leprechauns, who have a tendency to give rewards for freedom after being captured, whereas Alps give a reward for the return of their stolen hat.
Unfortunately, the sources I got the hat thing were in library books at my college (which I forgot the name of T_T) so most of this info would have to go on trust (if'n ya believe I wouldn't just make this up ^_^) But it does state that the Alp has to wear his hat at all times for his power is in it (as well as the eye, which has some kind of evil intent in it) and this is why he has to wear it even in other forms. There is also another type of Alp but it is not the same as ours, (Alp luchara or something to that effect) and that one just enters a body and makes the victim ravenously hungry, until they eat something salty and lay by the stream where it got inside them, where it is forced to leave out of thirst.
For the most part though, the books I looked up in the library while in search of character ideas, I did search for more sources, even consulting a German-to-English dictionary to try to fill in blanks. the Dictionary was only half helpful though, and out of the like 5 myth books, the alp was altogether forgotten in them, as well as a lot of other creatures in fact. Such is the problem with a creature that is spread between Germany and Switzerland, where they share it and things get changed a bit, including names. For Alp also goes by Trud, Mare, Alpdrukken, Alpmanchen(these are probably spelled wrong) and others. So it's kinda rare to find 2 sources that are exactly alike, unless they've been copy-pasted from another site, which in the search for more about the hat powers, I've seen quite a bit of and it's rather aggravating. Also, on that site where they say the alp was captured (I've seen that one too by the way ^_^) other sources would conflict it, since the female version of an alp is given a different name (mara in some sources, drud in others, and one more I forget) If there's anything else I'd be glad to fill in, I'm still loooking for info and sources myself, but it is so bloody difficult to find books about this stuff here! I never know what section they're gonna shove it under, especially when I'm looking for things on ghost and ufo accounts. I check reference but I think there's opinionated folk who shove those under "fiction" here.
Oh yes and by the way if you do find any really interesting sites with info, go ahead and link them. I've probably seen them all by now though, I find that typing "alp" by itself gets squat but typing related words like "goblin" and "nightmare" gets more sources. I spent a good part of the day translating German sites for info too. I've seen at least one other person with an Alp character on Deviant Art as well, it was indeed wearing a hat.

First of all, I'd like to THANK YOU for your long reply. I wasn't expecting so many words. @__@ <3333 (( Another link -- groups.msn.com/ghostsdemonsandangels/physicvampires.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_Message=4022&LastModified=4675425366828285612 )) I'm deeply into the fairy tales and myths myself, and the alp came across as one from the OLD tales, and it was rather depressing to find absolutely nothing on it - I find more on the nightmarish horse that lives under the water (water kelpie, I believe it's called) than I do the alps. I completely trust ya on the library book thing. x3 It makes me wanna go into old bookstores and look for whatever Fables I can find - I will let ya know if I can find anything on alps, most definitely. <333

I have a hobby of finding bizarre stuff about fantastical creatures, but same here! I thought that they were a made-up monster at first ^^. Shows you how wrong I was. Now I'm seriously considering making an Alp character, but I's not wanting to be ripping Amelius's ideas! (Oh, and I figure I'm somewhat responsible for those two, anyways. It's my fault they're on here. IO's my sis, Raine's her friend ^^

Alp (German) A vampyre-incubus or predatory blood-drinking ghost in German lore. An accomplished shapeshifter, the Alp can appear as a bird, cat, pig or dog and wears a "cap of concealment" (Tarnkappe) which bestows invisibility and magic powers when worn. From the same Teutonic root as Alf or Elf, meaning the "Shining White One". from www.wayaadisi.com/werewolf/lore.htmThen of course Monstrous.com has it, but it just repeats what's already been said... And dark.rage.users.btopenworld.com/vampa.html that site says Alp is a female vampire. Most sites I've seen say they are kind of elves, though, and talk about butterflies. Hope that added a bit more light to it... It was all I could find in like 10 minutes XD

haha, the lemon part makes me laugh, I'm not sure where they get the female thing from since about 90% of the places I've seen it say "typically male"(although not excluding I may say with that "typically") as Alp refers to the male form...kinda like calling something a male succubus I guess (brings back memories of old Elijah and Azuu haha, I won't repeat that joke though ^_^) Indeed I see a lot of elf references too... Oh and thanks a ton for that link! I've been looking everytwhere for something that pretains to their hat on the net ^_^
Daybreak, I don't think it would be ripping me off, I'd LOVE to see another alp character in a comic! Tony is feeling lonely out there! And of course it's great to see new posters here, so thanks for bringing them in ^_^
Everyone, I really appreciate the help too, I like to examine every facet and crevice of character development , so this has been a ton of help. Gives me mad inspiration too ^_^

Herher... Em...I...I'll volunteer to design a female alp Amy! I need something to do anyhow Ooo! Lookit this Amy! It's a bit different from your Alp Luachra defenition but generally the same: Alp Luachra - Particularely nasty Irish faeries invisible to human eyes. No one knows what they look like, and most folks who meet up with one don't realize it until it's too late. They are parasites. If someone is sleeping by a moving body of water, the Alp Luachra crawls in through their mouth (possibly in the form of a newt or salamander) and consumes any food in the stomach. The victim eventually dies of starvation or malnutrition. To rid oneself of this faery, consume large quantities of salt and hang around a stream with one's mouth open. The thirsty faery will live the body to drink the water. (NP - consuming lots of salt is dangerous for your body).

Actually, I'd only heard of "Alps" before in reference to a creature that sat on your chest and sucked the life out of you, paralyzing you. They were later replaced by witches, and more recently, Aliens do the job. This is actually all related to one syndrome(no idea what it's called): People wake up mentally, but the body is still in sleep mode and won't respond to the signals to move. The breathing is hampered, and feels like someone is sitting on your chest, and because of the half-asleep state, it's easy to imagine something ominous there. ^.^ It's kinda cool.
I don't care if Tony is the "accurate" portrayal of an Alp or not, because in all honesty, this is YOUR story, Amelius. In Ialus, sirens are NOT the same as the sirens in mythology: they are not "beautiful women with the bodies of birds" or something like that. They are my own interpretation of the legend. Tony seems pretty true to his heritage, though. ^.^

Honestly I've never even heard of 'Alps' before until CTV. Sure I've heard the myth of something grey sitting on your chest and pressing downward but every time I heard of the myth I heard that they were called Grey Ghosts. Still, I like the term Alp more as it makes Tony more endearing than the term Grey Ghost would. And yes, as magicklorelai said, Tony seems pretty spot on to what I've heard described.

Nowadays they say (in the vamp circles) that when you feel the weight on your chest, it's a psychic vampire's astral/spirit self attacking you for energy.
