Joshua nodded in agreement as he extinguished the fire circle. The nameless one tilted his head at Kazia's actions, then shrugged, standing. He looked around, checking to see if any of the smaller shadows had come back after all, but they hadn't. That didn't mean they wouldn't run into them in other areas, of course, so he stretched again as he waited for the humans, making sure he wasn't stiff after last night's fight.

"Thought that was always the intent." Burakki commented, running through a few stretches to wake himself up a bit more, "Ready when you are."

"I don't want to spend another night like that one, if those shadows are common in this area. We might not be so lucky, next time." Kazia grimaced and gathered up her bags. "Let's get moving. We can eat rations on the road."

Joshua nodded, following Kazia. The nameless one shook himself, then started up his roaming circles around the group, once again popping in and out of their sight as he patrolled.

Burakki nodded his agreement, following in the rear.
"I rather hope they're not." He said, "I'm not sure I've ever been face to face with one that big before, myself."

"It's been a long time since I've seen one that big. There were quite a few about, during the first waves." Kazia had been ten or eleven, then. She remembered the invasion with painful clarity.

"They're not usually this far away from settlements... There's not much for them to eat out here," Joshua added quietly. "I'm more curious about how it knew something was coming," he continued, glancing over at the nameless one as it came into view for a moment.

"Does it matter? It's an advantage we don't usually have. I say we don't look a gift horse in the mouth." Kazia double-checked the remains of the fires, then started walking, setting a brisk pace. She was serious about getting as far as possible.

"You have to pay extra if you want posies and rainbows." It wasn't her style. Gentleness really only came naturally to her when she was caring for something, and even then, her bedside manner was too... brusk, for some people. "I'm less concerned. Still don't know if it's your guardian, or why it's hanging around us."

"It would be nice to have some answers about it, I agree. But I don't think it would put itself at risk if it meant us ill... Is that more or less why you're less concerned about it?" Joshua asked, curious.

"Pretty much. Even trying to fight off that thing last night is one serious gesture of goodwill, if you ask me." Kazia glanced over at Burakki, then shrugged. "I'm a healer. It's what I'm best at. Guide work just brings some extra cash in."

"It's vile to charge for healing." The disapproving glare only landed on Joshua a moment before it shifted to the creature. "You'll break those open. Itching means it's healing. Now cut that out before you hurt yourself."
She spared Burakki a look. "Maybe you are. Jury's still out on whether I'm quite so... fortunate for having met you."

"I don't disagree. But there are those who would..." Joshua muttered, before shaking his head slightly. "At any rate, I was more thinking along the lines of people hiring a healer to stay with them, rather than charging for healing," he added.
The nameless one sighed, but nodded, shaking himself vigorously before returning to his roaming.

"Nobody's more or less worthy of healing because of the contents of their purse." Being able to feel other's wounds and illness had instilled in her some pretty rigid ideas for how things worked. "What are we going to do once we reach this castle, anyway?" She wanted to deflect the conversation off of her abilities, though she'd given them no reason to believe that they were beyond mundane.

Joshua sighed, running a hand through his hair.
"Search through it. I've been to the king and queen's main castle, the summer castle... the nobles closest to it... I'm just looking for a clue as to where they sent the princess," he answered as the nameless one came in close again.
He looked up with a sharp whine, tilting his head. It had been a while since the humans mentioned that again, and it still caused that same surge of anxiety in him.

"Yes, I know. I know it's practically a lost cause. I just... I've got to try," Joshua muttered. "As for what, I've no idea. If it's magical... Well, if that's the case, I've probably already missed something at the main castle..." he added to Burakki, before looking down at the creature.
"Is something wrong?" he asked. The nameless one stared up at the human, then slowly shook his head. However, while he still stayed with the group, he no longer made his circles. On the contrary, he no longer seemed to pay attention to anything around him aside from the ground under his feet, ears pulled back.

Kazia shook her head and kept walking. Why was she still coming along on this fool's errand? She hadn't wanted a mage to wind up dead due to his master's madness, but it didn't seem like Burakki was even that distressed by his situation. And still, she was... what, curious? Intrigued?

As it neared dark, they came close to one of the abandoned homesteads that littered the countryside. The nameless one hadn't returned to his circles, but he had recovered to the point of keeping an watch for the creatures.
"Think that would be safe enough for the night?" Joshua asked, glancing at the home. "If we could get it lit up? Or maybe the barn?" he added, studying the area. The doors to both house and barn stood wide open, and they were probably picked clean of anything useful, but at least they would provide a roof.

"I'd prefer the barn. Too many dark corners and closets in a strange house. It'll be easier to keep the one large space lit and secured." And a roof helped in more ways than shelter. Light was always stronger in a confined space. So long as they could rig something that wouldn't result in burning the place to the ground. "So unless you have arguments to the contrary..."
