"Oh... All right, then... Waiting would be best, it seems... Who takes first shift?" Joshua asked after a moment of thought, turning back to the other two.

Frankly, Kazia didn't trust these two to keep her safe. She did sit down, though. Slowly. Her staff still at the ready. "I'll be up for a while longer. Maybe if you actually get some sleep, your head won't be so soft in the morning." Not that she cared, really. But she'd like to get through this night alive, if it was all the same.

"You gonna take first, then, Kazia?" Burakki asked, letting the previous conversation go as quickly as it had come, "Just seeing if I've got your preference right."
He'd had plenty of rest in the slave cages. He didn't need any more even relatively soon.
"I'll probably just practice my techniques while I'm up and not on watch."

"Yeah, probably... I apologize," Joshua said softly, rubbing his eyes again. "Wake me... whenever you'd like me to take a watch," he added as he laid down, using his bag as a pillow. He was asleep almost instantly.

Kazia just grunted affirmatively, slipping out a little journal and a graphite stick. She could keep her ears and eyes open well enough while she was making notes, after all. Especially since she had a good bead on where the creature was. Assuming it was alone, in any case.

Burakki whistled slightly in surprise.
"Well that didn't take long." He commented, "Must've been utterly exhausted. Assume you don't mind if I shut up and leave you alone...."
He closed with that, and he'd reply if it was warranted, but he drew his sword and started going through some practiced motions. Couldn't have his defensive techniques getting stale now, after all.

The nameless one twitched an ear, looking over at the humans camp. After another dash and snap at the shadow creatures to scare them off again, he turned back to the entrance to the caves. If he was careful, they would not know he came back, right? Slinking, as close to the ground as he could, he slowly, carefully, inched his way back up towards the humans, taking advantage of what rocks and corners he could to hide himself.
He just wanted to listen. To settle his mind.

Kazia was quiet for a moment, scratching away at a page in her book. But after a few minutes she sighed, closed it, and stood back up, staff in hand. "It's stalking us." She could just barely hear it padding along over the crackle of the flames, once she knew what to listen for. Her magic still resonated with its body, alien though it was. That was actually comforting. The shadow creatures weren't flesh and blood.

"Yeah, I kinda thought as much, honestly." Burakki replied, winding his motions down and further charging the air around him from earlier, "I couldn't tell anything yet though.... you've either got some really nice senses, or magic. Either way, thanks for the heads up. Wait on any hostility, like he said, if you wouldn't mind too horribly."

He paused, noting the movement. What had alerted them? Uncertain, he looked around, searching. He could see no shadow creatures inside the cave near them. Surely they had not noticed him. Cautiously, silently, he continued creeping towards the humans. Not to his previous hiding spot, but there were always little areas he could settle into. Picking one such thing, close enough to listen, he stopped, curling up in the hollow in the rock.
Hopefully, even if they noticed him, he was not close enough to make them attack. He hoped. Skin shivering in his nervousness, he watched. Humans could hurt him... Not easily, but they could. He had learned that before.

"Naw, I was going to stick my wooden stick through the fire to attack the thing with nasty teeth and claws." Kazia resisted the urge to roll her eyes. Barely. "I live out here, kid. You get real good at noticing when there's things around that might want to eat you." She wasn't preparing to attack. Frankly, in a one-on-one fight with that thing, she would lose. But at least being on her feet with her staff in hand might give her a chance to defend herself if it struck.

Burakki sighed. Well that went over wonderfully.
"I'm not insulting your intelligence." He replied calmly, "I was just dictating that I agree with his request, on the admittedly astronomically small chance that he's right about what he thinks it was. I'm not nearly so arrogant as to think I'm smarter or better equipped out here than you are."
He did hope she'd get a bit less abrasive with time. He rather hoped that instead of being scarcely better than at a permanent ceasefire they could learn to get along.

The nameless one's ears twitched, and he sighed, ears pulling back. He did not understand why humans disliked him so. He protected them from the shadows as best he could. Not these little shadows - they were barely worth hunting - but the bigger things that stalked the city.
However, it seemed the voice that had disturbed him - the human that mentioned princesses first - was asleep. Curling into himself so as to conceal his mane as best he could, he closed his eyes with another sigh, dropping into a semi-aware state that counted for napping for him.

"I'm not fond of hurting things, despite my charming disposition." She paced the circle, listening. The creature seemed content where it was, for the moment, but it'd be stupid to trust it to stay that way. "Just don't let the man's delusions about princesses and whatnot trick you into dropping your guard. I'd like to leave this cave alive, rather than in some critter's gut."

"I'm not so foolish as to be unprepared for an attack in hostile territory, Kazia." Burakki replied, "But that is good to hear. I tend to be more reactive than anything in terms of combat, and in a pinch I should be able to block an assault if it comes. I've never been too hopeful that the stories were true, but it keeps some people's hopes alive, and that's not a bad thing."

He snorted slightly, shaking his head as that word penetrated his semi-aware state. Sitting up, made restless again by the mention, he studied the fire circle and the humans. Uneasy, but pulled by this thing that made him so restless, he crept closer to it. They already knew he was here... he supposed there was no reason trying to conceal himself. What stories? What was going on? He needed to know.

"It's a bad thing if it gets them killed." Kazia turned her head slightly, following the beast's movements. "What does it want with us if it is a guardian? Otherwise, I figure we're just a better meal that those shadows."

"I suppose so, but I at least haven't known any who've fallen into that category as of yet." Burakki replied as he watched it approach, "As for what it might want, I've no idea, regardless of what it is."
"Not sure if you can understand us, but if you can, hello." He commented, somewhat nonchalant.

He stopped, sitting far enough away from the fire circle that the heat was not unbearable, and tilted his head. He understood, but was unsure of how to respond to the human. He was more used to the female's reaction to him than this male. After a moment, he nodded at the humans, then waited, wary, for their reactions.

Burakki chuckled softly.
"Yeah, looks like it did." He said, "Well, let's double check this then. Nod again if you do not mean harm."
He was just as surprised by all of this as Kazia was, despite his exterior reaction, but he'd somewhat found that it was easier to react to things if he took chances first, such as addressing the creature, or even Kazia before, when they were in town.
