He twitched an ear towards them. Royal, princess... guardian... why did those words bother him? He whined softly, burying his head under his paws.

"Can't be too careful." Kazia paced the perimeter, adding wood to the fires. "We'll sort it out in the morning, if it's still hanging around." They couldn't do much right now, with it being so dark out.

Burakki frowned slightly at the sound the creature made.
"Are you alright?" He asked it, addressing Kazia afterward, "No, which is why I'll still be keeping watch until it's time to wake him. And yeah, that's probably true."

He got back to his feet, shaking himself with an absent minded nod to the human. Those words made him twitchy and restless. He paced around the fire circle, checking outside to see if any of the larger shadow beasts were in the area.

Kazia just sighed and settled down on a rock. She's still be staying up a while. It was too hard to sleep, not knowing why there was a large, toothy critter lurking around.

"Alright." Burakki commented, "I'll let you be then, on account of that I'm not real sure what to say to you. Hope you don't mind too much."
He let his defenses wane slightly, allowing a portion of the charge he'd held in the air to dissipate, but keeping himself aware of their surroundings nonetheless.

He spent the rest of the night outside the cave, soaking in the sun when it rose.
---
The night passed relatively uneventfully. Joshua, taking the last shift after his first actual rest in days, kept the fire burning brightly as the shadow beasts paced at the edge of the light. When the sun rose, and once again the beasts retreated further into the cave, he packed things up, pausing a moment to wake the other two.

Kazia started a little, giving him a sharp look before she pushed herself upright. "Is it still out there?" No, she hadn't slept much, but it wasn't that unusual. There were far too many nights where she couldn't be sure of her own safety if she rested too soundly.

Burakki sat up nearly instantly. He'd slept well enough, but lightly, as was appropriate in such times.
"Any sign of our friend still?" He asked, covering a yawn as he stretched.

"I'd like to hope so..." Joshua said. "But I've never seen one in person, either... It certainly looks how they've been described to me, though." He thought for a moment, before addressing the creature.
"Are you a guardian?" he asked.
The nameless one tilted his head with a confused whine, ears pulled back, and Joshua sighed.
"I suppose that would have been too easy..."

Burakki chuckled.
"If nothing else, we can assume we piqued its interest, no?" He asked, "Frankly, I'm not sure why you're so against having something around that can fight and has no interest in fighting us. Seems something of a boon to us. Though I do wonder why it keeps whining like that.... a bit worrisome."

"I... can." Kazia frowned a little, torn. She should just walk away now. She had the cash, and this was turning a hell of a lot more dangerous than she'd been expecting. But at the same time, this had gotten... interesting. And she was intrigued despite herself. Also, it would mean leaving a slave-mage at the mercy of a possible madman. Or idiot. She hadn't decided which Joshua was.

"Of course, that means the questions becomes whether you will." Burakki chimed in, "I don't think either of us would really fault you if you decided you were done with our fool's errand as you've so firmly stated we're on. Correct me if I'm being presumptuous, of course."

Burakki approached the nameless creature.
"I'm not really sure what to call you, so I think I'll stick with "friend" for now, so you'll know when I'm addressing you, if you don't mind too much." He said, "I hope that whatever's causing you distress will let you be, in time."
It seemed intelligent, at the least, and he did hope that it would act as a friend of sorts to their party. The whimpering would start to bother his ears and his psyche eventually, because logic dictated that a sound like that coming from any living thing meant pain or distress of some variety.... and if it was going to help them, he didn't much like that.

Kazia just waved him off, going over the burnt-out ring and pouring sand over anywhere there might still be sparks lingering. It was a good habit to be in, just in case. For now, she let the lightening mage deal with the creature. He was more equipped to defend himself if it turned hostile, in any case.

The nameless one watched Kazia cover where the fire had been in confusion. Why didn't they just leave it to burn? It was not as if it could spread, in the cave - nor that it would be a bad thing if it did.
--- Joshua let Kazia deal with that as he headed outside to examine their surroundings.
"What sort of shelter do you think we will make it to by nightfall?" he asked.

"You hired me to take care of this sort of thing." Kazia rolled her eyes, but only a little. After all, it only took the right breeze coming through to scatter embers outside, and she didn't feel like dodging a forest fire on top of everything. "There's a few cliffs in the area. Shouldn't be difficult to find shelter under one."
