Time to face the strange...changes.
(Thanks, David Bowie ^_6)
ALRIGHT! I just lost 5 paragraphs of writing thanks to this computer but no matter! *eye-twitch*
This is a thread about character evolution! We shall start off with Charby, our leading man.
Notice a few things? Charby's hairdo started off a little less extreme, more like slight tufts lower set on his head. The only real similarity they retain is that there is 3 points. Charby's hair changed about the 3rd comic into the series, I do believe it was the comic "Chicken Surprize" where the horn-like top point appeared. the reason for this change was 1: the hair originally could be mistaken for pigtails and 2: because of this, people would say to me "she's cute". By the time I first posted a CTV comic online, Charby was well into pointy-hairness. (funfact: when I posted the first page of the web version, the original version was already up to where we meet Crispo)
Charby was going to be the ultimate corny, cliche vampire, complete with upside-down sleeping tendencies, like a bat. I decided that was lame...but not until after doing a few comics with him sleeping like that. Maybe I'll show you 'cuz one of them I actually found funny (well, his expression at least)
His body has changed a bit too. He used to be a stumpy, big-headed, bugeyed...cutie. ^_^
Buuuut after a bazillion "harhar he looks like Squee!, you read Squee! Right?" This is Squee by the way
true I have indeed read it, but Charby certainly wasn't influenced by him since I'd made him about, oh, a year before I knew what that was? ^_^
His design was influenced, actually, by a picture I saw in a comic encyclopedia in the school library. I cannot for the life of me recall the character's name, but it was Japanese in origin and was a little boy who had long wild hair and onl one eye was visible. It was a Very, very old comic though. Also, Charby had always been more similar to Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes than either Squee OR Invader Zim (this annoys me, can you tell?) Eventually, after getting sick of all the comparisons, Charby started to take on a more manga style, drifting a bit from the original style I'd drawn in for so much of my life *cue violins* this is why you'll notice he's taken on more "realistic" proportions. Also, I didn't like having to distort things like his arms so he could touch things like the top of his head or something.
As for stripey shirts? Well, pirates wore stripey shirts in Peter Pan (the Disney one) and "The Monkees" TV show
I saw, so of course that's natural, I didn't have to look at Jhonen's stuff to get that idea *grumblebitterness*
Okay before I angry myself into a corner!
His personality has changed a bit too, where Charby started off basically as this:
"Cute and innocent, but no dummy, and can turn on a dime into a hideous monster. Enjoys violence like it's candy. Always gets the better of his rival."
I was going for more like "Bugs Bunny" but with that formula I am now thinking "Tweety"
I gave him a better purpose and he doesn't do the "innocent" act so often (even though it wasn't an act) since up to the point where we started, Charby had it fairly well. But then things have been happening to him that have turned him a little bitter.
Also, I cannot go on the "sweet innocent boy who might knife you if you hug him, but in a cute way" because that is like so many "Lenore" clones I have seen.
FYI ^_^
(Also another comic I'm accused of copying, I'll say the same thing: Unless I'm psychic, I didn't steal the idea!)
Charby has always been close to me in personality too.
Annyway I'm being rushed, so I leave you with this pic of the evolution of the character, from the first and second pictures to something smack in the middle, to our more recent rendition.
