Yes, I'm adding yet another thread. I do that a lot, don't I?
Anyway, this is just because I've seen lots o' people complaining about the same problem, and I recently had an experience with it.
So, a girl comes up to me and goes, "Can I look through your sketchbook? You draw so well." Of course, I let her, because complimenting me turns me into a defensless pile of goo with no will of its own, plus she used good grammer! She formed complete sentances! This is so rare in my life that it's almost sad.
Back on topic; She was looking through my sketchy-book and on evey page she would exclaim: "This is copyrighted! I've seen this on cartoon network/adult swim!" She would cite specific shows (mainly Inuyasha) which I watch and normally ones that I am quite fond of to use against me! Most of the time there had been no mention of anything that looked remotely like my drawing anywhere on that show! And, of course, the ones she was most adament about were the two half-demons that I created to represent myself and my best friend.
I know bunches of you have similar stories.

Oh yuck. That is despicably cruel of her.
I myself learnt to draw in an animation/anime style by copying the art of other mangaka and comic artists that I liked. Copying the stuff you like, teaches you how to do it properly. And eventually, you develop your own style. I know it happened to me ^^;;....
But grrrawr. That was cruel of her.

Oh, I hate that! I mean, she needs to get her facts straight before accusing people of something. Not to mention that it's perfectly acceptable to draw fanart of a show you like! My problem is my fondness of monsters and bizarre critters. I always get the dreaded "OMG is that a POKE-EE-MON?" comment. *twitches* Ugh!

Go Shippo!
And update, she keeps calling my work "cartoon Network characters". This is very annoying, 'cause I've gone toward a more realistic style. Plus, my own origional story characters have more than once been accused of being from other shows, books, comics etc. Such as a pictuer I'm actually rather fond of wherein it shows my character Eithne (vampire) with cat-demon Yasa. Yasa is about two feet tall and is sitting on Eth's shoulder. She's been accused, (on pose and size ALONE) of being a poke/digi mon. WHAT?
Also, as most of you probably know, I'm drawingout the CTV Q&A. I did the first comic of Amy introducing it, and a guy told me that he'd seen pictures of her on the internet. Naked. ...huh? I told him quite simply that this was not possible. He didn't believe me. Am I not the one drawing her? Then I asked him why he was looking up picture of naked women on the internet. He left me alone.
People have actually accused several pictures of women that I've drawn that have even the slightest fantasy feel to them of being renditions of naked internet-girls. NO.
That turned into more of a rant than I expected. Sorry.

Someone once thought I'd taken a name from a western roleplay... okay, so that thing just confused me, because I actually named the charactor after a color. It's weird, no one looks through my sketchbooks and does that... mainly I get "OOOooo! BATMAN!" I draw the wimpiest-looking Batman too.

I especially hate it when people take you seriously as an artist until they notice some of your work is in an anime/manga style. Then it's 'oooh, an-ee-may. Pff, whatever. Anyone can draw that!' Most of the people who level such complaints aren't artists either, because fellow artists know how hard it is to draw anything well, in any style. Unless you're a stick-figure-ist, like myself. ^_^

I'd probably whack anyone who called my art "an-ee-may". It's cartoony, dang it! and it's not anime, it's manga!.... DANG IT!!

I have often had my art style described as "evil pokemon" ¬_¬

I've DRAWN evil Pokémon, so there you go...
My art has never specifically been called anything, but certain character ideas and elements have been accused of ripoffs.
To me, though, even worse than that is this word: 'cliché'. ._.

Well, all I ever draw is millions of sketches of characters from webcomics that NOONE ever reads, even if I drag them down the computer by the ear and read them outloud. NOONE ever reads the comics I suggest. So, I guess I'm free to go... unless there's a copyright on putting all of my characters in bright pink berets. Which is a lame idea anyway, so I'm good. My brother's had many disgustifying experiances as you have though, Silver. He draws manga, and he draws gooooooood. And then people start getting on his back for him drawing this guy called 'RedShaw' or whatever. I dunno. It's hard to think when you've waken up on Saturday morning at 6:00 to a laptop on your bed. Urgh, I'm gonna stop now before I do something I'll regret.

Welllllll... I actually don't get angered at much.... That's because I prefer to draw my own characters..... And I have a very different style that is all mine.... And I don't show my drawings to ignorant people ^____^

As far as I know, it is completely legal to draw characters that other people own, as long as you do not claim the character is your own, and don't sell it without permission. Y'know, it's a bit off the subject, but my chipmunks are often called cats. Stupid peoples, they look NOTHING like cats!

Of course they're not cats! Their ears are too small. and so are their tails!

Seems to me that many folks try to identify what they see with what they know. So they end up thinking that theyfve seen something before somewhere despite itfs uniqueness. A laymanfs problem methinks.
So Ifve always wonders. How do you actually go about getting something copywrited? Do you draw it and then thatfs that or do you have to go through some sort of official process or something?

Some webcomic artists just lay claim to their stuff, as long as there's a warning visibly on the website or comic or art piece, you can take limited legal action. There is a legal process you can go through, to make things smoother.

Actually, that's technically not true. (<---just finished a copyright unit in class) From the moment of creation, a work is copyrighted. There doesn't have to be a warning on it, and regestering it just means it will be easier to prove that you did infact create it. (When I find my notes on it, I can probably explain it better...^^;

*sweatdrop* Sorry, I was just repeating what I've read and/or seen. I'm glad you're here to straighten stuff out.
And the Inuyasha thing happens to my friend too. Actually, if someone has seen an episode of Inuyasha, they compare any person who has animal ears to him.
