They are in my basement, and I have to put my hat on my beverages to keep them out, and I have to eat like a caveman (all hunched over and growling) because they try to land on it! One even was brazen enough to land on my fork! And oh the anger when I saw one swimming in my salad dressing.... And the way they go for the face, oh so annoying. and I feel like they regenerate...I closed the door to the room they are coming from (basement pantry where my ferret dragged something off to hide, possibly a potato or something) and I kill the ones coming after me cuz I'm by the glowing computer screen (hose em down with air freshener, they fall, WHAM with a paper towel, but not even a moment later another one is back. And my hands are like icicles down here, it's winter, why are they not DEAD?!! *smack*

Perhaps your family should invest in pest control? Or use bug repelant on the computer screen XD Muaha.

haha the thing is, there's not really that many of them and I'm the only one that is bothered by their presence, so it would be a waste of money to go after them (we just gotta find what they are in, I know this makes us sound like slobs haha ) really we do keep a clean house but the basement is another matter...especially with pets who enjoy making a "cache" of food they will never eat >_<

They like sweet sticky things, too. I make honey traps....use a small jar or make a small jug-shaped aluminum foil trap and put a little honey or sugar water in there and let them get stuck. they are especially annoying this time of year, I agree.

Be glad it's just fruit flies. Our house has stinkbugs. I collect them coz they're cute, but they can be annoying. It's like living with little, flying, noisy skunks. Which would actually be awesome if they were real, and not a metaphor for small, shield-shaped insects.

(heehee, little flying noisy skunks? that's cute!)
*sigh* fies, what little beasts! living down south, i have a ton of flies. every summer i have to take up my weapon (a flyswatter) and go prowling about the house looking for them. (once, there was a fly that i had to kill three times! i'm serious, it just wouldn't die!) but i haven't had to kill them as often lately because i let spiders stay in my house (i don't mind them, i actually like them), so they do their share of work, and they also get a meal out of it!...but i don't know many people who would be willing to house a bunch of creepy-crawlies just to get rid of some flies, hehe.

Hmm, I remember when a friend by accident had some bananas left so they start to rot... it ended with a carneval with fruit flies o.o
I mean, she opened the trash can and they swarmed out XP they used something called 'Radar' wich kills them quickly, its some sort of bug spray but you have to leave the room some the fumes go out.. or else can both you and pets get a bit fuzzy.
sadly that is all advice i can give.. but i got a funny recipe on killing ordinairy flies ^^

Mmmmm. Well, if the source of the flies is food, they probably are fruit flies. But I'd like to point out that fungal gnats are often mistaken for fruit flies. They look pretty much the same, but gnats like to live in dark, wet places like drains or houseplants. If you get a fly infestation that seems to be coming from the sink or a plant, that's probably what you have. They're pretty easy to take care of, just clean out the drain or let the plant dry up for a little while (note: don't try that for sensitive plants. Instead, you can buy insecticidal soap/oil that'll kill them good. Or fly strips.) Okay, enough rambling. I'm a bit of a plant fanatic (gee, could that be why I want to study botany? )

Blast the fruit flies! AND the mosquitos! Eeeeeeeeee... But I simply can't bring myself to kill them! My bedroom was once infested with wolfspiders... My sister wouldn't come within thirty feet of my bedroom untill I caught them ALL, and my dad sealed off the hole in the wall they were hiding in.

Did you kill the poor little spiders?

Never! I picked them up and put them outside with a pet on the cephelothorax, and a fond fairwell. I simply can't kill things if I'm not going to eat them. And kentucky fried wolfspider isn't that appealing to me...

I really like daddy long leg spiders. I don't know their proper nemes, but they are sweet little things that will crawl and crawl and never bite!
My mom is so allergic to bees, she got a gigantic leathery pad on her arm >__<

I've never been bitten by a daddy long leg. I used to keep a family of them (6 or so) in my closet, where they used to eat the flies and moths that get in my room. They were very gentle.

Oh man, fruit flies suck!! We used to have a huge fruit fly problem in the kitchen. I guess we had the trash there too long or something. There was literally like 100 of them, sitting on the kitchen cabinets and crap. It was insane! So my dad and I got a vaccum (the kind with the hose) and got them all. That works well, too. You just have to find them, which can be hard since they're tiny. They also got into my room, but I got the vacuum again and took out my trash so they left.
