I've given into the temptation and downloaded a program I know nothing about. Could someone who's familiar with the GIMP give me some pointers? Specifically, how in Sam's hell do you manipulate layers?!

Manipulate layers? What are you trying to do? From what I recall of Photoshop, it's quite a bit like that.

Well, tonight I was playing around trying to figure out how people make speech/thought bubbles in the GIMP. Now that I know, I thought maybe other people here might want my instructions.
How to make speech/thought bubbles in the GIMP.
1. Write the text. 2. Use the ellipse (circle) tool to select the text, make sure there's room around it. If you need to, move the text around so that it fits in there nicely. 3. Use the "Create and Edit paths" tool and make a nice triangle to make a "speech bubble tail." Hold down Shift and click Create selection from path button to add the tail to the bubble. 4. Make sure you're on a layer specifically for bubbles, and use the paint bucket tool to fill the selection with white (or whatever color you want). 5. On the "Layers/Channels/Paths.." window choose the Paths tab. Click the "Selection to path" button. Now click the stroke path button. You can play around with the stroke size.
That should be all. Let me know if you need any clarification or help.

Alrighty, layers is quite easy, just looks really freaking hard...
Now, if your wanting to use lineart, all you've to do is follow these simple steps and your good.
1) Get your lineart out and all situated how you want. 2) Right click on the picture and go to layer. 3) Go to 'Transperancy' and click 'Color to Alpha' 4) It'll look all checker boardy at this point.. Now, right click again on the picture and go to 'Layers', now you hit 'New Layer', MAKE SURE ITS A WHITE LAYER. 5) At the bottom of your Tool Box area there should be something saying 'Layers' and closer down will have two icons with blue eyes to the right of them.. Move the New Layer, or whatever you named it, down past your lineart by clicking and dragging. This'll make the lineart pop up without the checker board effect, and is crucial to coloring in layers. 6) From now on you will be right clicking, going to layers, adding new layers and using 'Transperant Layers' this time for everything. Its also best to name each layer as you come at them, (IE: Skin, Hair, Eyes...) 7) When your all done coloring, go to each layer by clicking on them in the toolbox and erasing when you went outside the lines or over into another section, it'll only erase that layer ^^ I hope this helped.. ^^
