Here's the most recent page that DD doesn't seem to want me to view so I imagine it's the same for others. (I snuck in through the cached version from google to get this image) Now from this page we notice many many other creatures wearing the same hat as Kavonn. This leads me to believe that Kavonn is not the only one of his kind. Kavonn's brood (for lack of a better title) all see to have the same hats and stave's as Kavonn. I imagine they all share a common weakness as well. In the scene it appears we can see the same woman twice with different slits under her eyes in each one sharp the other rounded. Since Kavonn's are rounded and he does not use his power for greed, I imagine that the rounded eyes are of those that do not abuse their powers and the sharp eyes are those that do. This is quite apparently an adverse effect of the staff since Labelle's eyes did sharpen and she was not wearing the hat rather than using the staff. Seeing the possibility of multiple hats and from Kavonn's own conformation to Yiska that his hat is sentient it is entirely likely that the hats are some sort of guardians of the ley lines (or portals) of the multi-verse and they employ through their own means their own guardians and grant the guardians powerful artifacts to defend the hat. These so called hat guardians are near-immortal as long as they have their staff in hand as Kavonn shows us by coming back from the brink of death just by grabbing his staff (courtesy of a stupid Sadick). One other notable power is their prehensile hair which is likely a defense in case the staff is taken to easily retrieve it, unless Labelle freaks out and points the staff at the guardian. There was more and more sense made in the way I put this on DD but that bit of data is inaccessible at the moment -kicks DD-

I was under the assumption that Kavonn was the currant bearer of the hat, and the others were just previous owners. I just figured the hat gave him their memories or something. Who knows I guess we'll find out

I agree with glidel, I thought those were previous owners. I would find it unlikely that there are multiple staffs (what's the plural of staff?) and hats about with that level of power. I do think the round/sharp pupils theory is correct.
I'm not sure, in any case, that calling them a 'race' would be entirely appropriate. But that doesn't really matter.
On another note, that transformation looks HIGHLY painful.

Ooo, it delights me to see discussions going on again here Let's encourage this with some image sneak peeks, eh? There's no particular order to this set up, it's just the way the pictures laid out ^_^ Odin, truly sorry your comments were swallowed up, if it's any comfort I did see them before it the site reset! DD's having trouble with the new server they moved to so they could implement their DD store. Doodlesthebear: I have the art unobscured for that one too, but it ain't pretty! I think it's more horrible than last time because it's in color now, the first time I put a dot-tone filter on it and wasn't so detailed on what exactly was going on. *refrains from spoiling the conversation with spoilers* I know what's going on, but I do love it so when I get to see what you guys think. I've seen some very clever ideas here lately, but I am keeping quiet on whether they are right or wrong for now! If I came in here and told you how it was all the time I'd be no fun!

While it is entirely possible that he simply absorbs the memories of past guardians it would be more likely that more memories than his own (as in there would be more random off the wall memories) would be present and most are clearly his such as Azzy, Ervain, Salti, and Phineaus.
It's entirely likely that there are multiple staves and hats from other dimensions (the staff itself is clearly from another dimension since it came out of the hat) and their wearers simply moved between dimensions and met each other.
On another note I has much love for yay for piccys!!!! -glomps them especially the dark skinned one with purple hair-
On a side note that my be artistic license their hats are all different where the skull is concerned.

*nods* artistic inconsistency 'cuz I drew them at different sizes with different media ^_^ I've been trying to pin it down lately though, I admit I didn't have trouble drawing his hat until many people said it was hard to draw and then I was like "nuu, it's easy! I just....OH." Noticed I wasn't exactly drawing it in consistent manner, just the basic shape! It was so lumpy when he first showed up, I was a bad artist girl!

I guess I just WANT Kavonn's hat to be the only one. If there were several of them about, I would feel Kavonn was a little less special. And I actually like the character of Kavonn's hat better than I like Kavonn. XD But we really have very, very little information to go on. Kavonn is secretive about his past and, well, about pretty much everything; we could around and around like this forever.
I'm guessing it's artistic license, but I don't really think Kavonn can have memories of himself looking at himself, if you understand what I mean. He can remember things he SEES, but not how he looked at the time.
Also, yay bonus pics!

Well, to throw one more thing in there as well, Mye doesn't always see memories so much as events in another person's past as an outside observer. Sort of like how in A Christmas Carol, the Ghost of Christmas Past can bring Scrooge back to observe his own past from an outside perspective? It's kinda like that, but mentally (and in short bursts) instead of physically traveling there. She can see the recordings of events that happened around a person, or since we know that Kavonn is quite closely tied with the hat, events that were recorded around that as well. So it could go either way ^_^

I's actually more curious as to the evil glimmer in the eye of Princess Ervain in the panel to the left of Azalea, more specifically the image that is reflected in her eye. It's a touch hard for me to make out and sadly I lack the technical skills to enlarge the image without reducing it to a blotch of pixels. Regardless, as was implied by Odin, the staff itself seems to be the source of the transformation of the eyes, whereas the hat itself transforms the rest of the body. The two are obviously connected, sharing the same skull motif, not to mention both of which being in possession of the other "hat guardians." The better question would be, what is the purpose of the "hat guardians"? For what purpose much they protect the hat? The staff itself is a source of great power, but it seems to be a tool meant for the use of the hat wearer. Let's not also forget an important note that Kavonn states concerning his transformation, it was an event which left him feeling neutral. This would seem to imply that if the Hat itself had a greater purpose, that it was meant to remain outside the control of any aligned forces (something akin to Heaven & Hell if you need an example.) The hat seems to have two powers, aside from transforming the wearer. The power to open portals to other realms of existence and the ability to locate objects of of function for the hat-wearer to utilize.
Anyways, enough of that. I'll let the rest of you speculate a bit.

I would be extremely disappointing if he had a race of hat people. I always thought of him like the guardian of a portal I think that immortality is a curse... 200 years for Kavonn is fine cause he isn't so jaded yet but like the vampires in Anne Rice's books they get careless or suicidal and things slip through and bad things happen so they resign or kill themselves and the post is handed along to another person. they pass the responsibility along

Ok I should probably elaborate on my Kavonn's race speculations. When I say race I don't mean villages amounts or anything I mean a small number exist most-probably from parallel dimensions.

Wish granted Vagus! This was merely hinted at during the brief conversation Kavonn had with Ervain at the party, and I'll toss in another treat, the reason Kavonn may have been distrusting of Azelea when they first met. Oh, that wasn't the only reason mind you, but that's another story for another time! Oh, and I'll be nice to you too Odin, you were right that those papers have something to do with the Bureau but they're actually documents and rubber stamps, and folders with red tape on them. It does look like a bulletin board though, I admit! I think the rubber stamp detail got lost in the resizing. Regardless of what they were, the intended affect went over, which was good. *laughs evilly* Artemisia, I wish I could say things one way or the other without spoiling things, just hope ya trust were I go with this I'm really enjoying hearing your ideas on this as well, I feel so lucky to have readers like you guys who are paying attention to the details. Too often I feel like people don't care and are just reading it like there's no substance, or are just reading it without really absorbing it, like "hey it's there, I looked at it." I don't wanna go into artsy-rant mode, but I do put a lot of thought into the stories...agonize over it really, you can ask Nick about it! (you can even blame that for my lateness this week...I should be working now but I'm combination sick with a cold and having motivation troubles!) It's nice to not be treated like I write gimmicky fluff with no real merit for discussion. Youse guys makes me happy

Aha! I was right, I had assumed it was Kavonn's staff, but as mentioned before, it was hard to make out. I could barely make out the skull motif which was the major clue in my guess. Next random guess, but I's guessing that the girl in the upper right corner of the splash is the girl that Kavonn cares for that was mentioned by the Charby during one of his evil tantrums. She appears twice in the spread (or at least two very similar characters) which would seem to imply a stronger relation with Kavonn. Although one thing that I wonder about is the blonde hat-bearer. There are two blondes in the splash, one with the rounded eyes and the other with pointed, but I wonder if they are two separate characters or the same but at different points in time (ie rounded eyes is the early image and then at a later time she began abusing her power.)

Well, according to Ervain's page on the wiki (and the comic, but it's kinda cool to have a wiki to source), she tried to steal Kavonn's staff. So it's probably just like a glare of envy or, uh, 'weapon lust' or something.
Again I'll state that I'm most intrigued by the hat's obvious personality. It thinks, chooses, and apparently gets jealous, so it must possess some kind of higher-level intelligence. If so, we could speculate about how exactly it came to be. How many seemingly inanimate magical objects have their own consciousness?
If we go with your theory, Odin, that there are multiple hats to protect multiple ley lines, do you believe they are all connected or somehow 'aware' of each other? Or are they independent?
One last thing: I know there are a lot of readers out there, Amelius, who could probably participate in this discussion easily. And that's something that I believe moving from DrunkDuck will help with. You attract a lot more 'serious' readers who are forumgoers with your own site. And, uh, Charby is about the farthest thing from gimmicky fluff I've ever seen in my life. So don't sweat that part!

Well doodles I use the term ley lines for lack of a better term at the moment but I will do my best to describe how they would fit into my theory. Imagine if you will a massive web of invisible magical energy each connecting various points of the world together. Even if we don't consider multiple hats the one would still be an outlet into this web at the portal.
Taking into account required item of the guardian the hat chooses a path along these lines to space of the required item and rends a hole in space there and takes the item pulling it back to it's home portal. Accepting this then the so called portal parasite may just be the spirit of the hat and it has a weird fix for jackalopes.
Assuming there are multiple hats and they are all the same they likely have the same creator/s or perhaps they could even be the creator/s of some eclectic group of sages or something that decided to bind their consciousness to portal guarding hats choosing their own guardians to aid them in their eternal quest to keep a sense of normalcy in the world.
In any case they would be aware of each other but likely function independently carrying on the will of whatever it is that drives magical hats into doing strange and magical things. If ever two hats would come into contact with each other it would more likely be by the hat guardians doing.
I do wonder if mayhaps the hat guided Kavonn into the high position he is in
Also on a completely different note I completely agree with doodles on this one Amy. Also until the website is complete maybe you should do a simple banner for the CTV forums to see if you cant attract more readers into discussing here.

hmm Odin and Doodles, those are interesting points do you wonder therefore why so many portal holders and magical weapons congregate n the same house.
That house seems considerably bigger on the inside and seems to contain an attic that cannot possibly contain from the view of the outside and a basement that goes for miles. This is a sure sign of magic. however some of that might be explained by Mye's habit of dumping potions in the yard... distorting space.
doodles, you have a good idea about them having personality (as is obvious) but the same seems to happen with Mannik's hats (i think of them more as reverse Empaths) and the magic weapons oswego, the scythe and zerlocke's axe (Zerlocke counts as a sorta moocher cause he's there for such a long time) Hex's amulet and Mye's wand are probably aware of each other (with proximity they will probably be stronger) but all these things are in one spot or drawn there if powerful objects guide people along ley lines do you think maybe that house is a crossing point for ley lines a sort of north pole Fairies are attracted to power but they have power in themselves too. Maybe the magic is manipulating her emotions to gather the most power in one place to.... YESSS... EUREKA!!! that much power along a crossing of ley lines would open a portal through to the other dimension Charby is supposed to open it but maybe it is all of them the most powerful of the creatures have an emotional connection to that house Claire is drawn there by Menu Rosey by her goals/Kavonn (she's in denial) Zerlocke by Mye (obviously) Rodericke by Zeno (vengence) Quixoto by Charby Victor by Charby (Vic is pretty powerful for a human) Kavonn by his job Yiska by her job Tony by Mye and friends Mannik by friends (would be powerful if he wasn't insane) Hex by Mye (vice versa) Zeno by Mye and all the others any more raw power and the fabric of space time would rip anyways but if Rodericke attacks or zeno goes crazy and blows up a bunch of elites' heads and they need to draw energy from their surroundings (more than likely Nikodemus and the rest would come to Charby's aid) it could take too much magic from that and open the passage that Emma was talking about.
Amy this is simply thinking aloud and rhetoric cause actually finding out the truth would be boreing. It would be like if Socrates was in the middle of a debate and Athena parted the clouds and said "YES THIS IS TRUE BUT RECONSIDER YOUR POINT ON ...etc." Socrates: Oh thats great! Plato: well what do you want to do now? Socrates: I don't know what do you want to do? i get the impression that we all positively enjoy wallowing in our own ignorance but the fact that this long a conversation can come from one page is rather astounding this comic is not fluffy (even Menu is furry, not fluffy)

Hmm, actually Artemisia, I would disagree with your statement that the other magical objects have personalities. I have yet to see any of them (with the exception of the scythe) be personified in any way. Kavonn has, on multiple occasions, made reference to his hat being angry or jealous. Again excluding the scythe, the only other object I recall having any personification along those lines would be Hex's skull. He mentions at one point that the... spirits, or somesuch, will be in Tony's favor, which is why he would be able to use Hex's skull.
And the fact that all the powerful people converge in one spot? Well, it could be some sort of power vortex, but I'd guess that it's just the plot. ;D

I'm not talking about personification... just sort of feelings Them not just being tools of the trade by Oswego's or the Axe's personality I mean that it seems to react to the situation in how it changes them. Reacting does not necessarily imply personality (sunflowers react) but they may be halfway sentient like the hat. The spirits of vengence are why i thought the wand and amulet would be stronger together, when they can... err... communicate, then again now that the master is gone will there be any connection at all. In a written universe fate, plot and magic are all one

I believe doodles covered everything I wanted to say which was really the last line he said but again I only used the term ley lines for lack of a better term I do not believe that they are really a plot device in Amy's story.
