Well, a quick glance at the members list lets one see that there are some odd names here and there. So I'll ask, what was the inspiration (or lack thereof) for the names that each of you choose to use as your handle?
As for myself, vagus is latin for "wandering" and "undecided" and is the root word for vagabond and vague. All of which can be used to describe me. I've lived in various parts of the US and even spent some time in Europe. I rarely take an extreme view in any topic, which leads many to think of me as whishy-washy. Also I think that life should be spent enjoying the here and now and not worrying too much about the future.

My name is taken from my DD screen name and I chose that because part of the song 'Lilac' by Plastic Tree was stuck in my head, the part where they say 'Lilac' over and over and it's like the only English in the entire song. Still haven't found a translation for it yet. I don't even know what a proper lilac looks like.
So...yeah...real deep. D:

A lilac is a purply-pink kinda flower. And yes, from that description you can tell that botany is one of my favorite subjects. What is a DD screen name though?

That's a pretty interesting question. Well my screen name derived from the Japanese publishing comapny named Kodansha Limited. It published one of my favorite animes, Cardcaptor Sakura, which I saw when I was first being introduced to anime as a child. Anime has a big effect on my life so I took the name Kodansha when I was very young and I did some modifying and I turned it into Kanidasha. Which is what I use as my online name for everything.

I run Evil Empire Comics hence Evil Emperor Nick.
I might have gone with Nicholas but most sites don't even give you enough characters for Evil Emperor Nick hence why it is shortened to EEN here and some other places.

My current name is derived from my former job on Ymir-RO (a ragnarok online private server) as a support GM. At the time the boss was trying for a theme so I was GM-Odin and worked with GM-Loki and GM-Ymir for some time before my job switched to full time.

Kanidasha: If I were more awake (time for nap methinks) I could try to remember my Japanese and think if that name means something, but alas I am lazy and sleepy. EEN: So that's what EEN stands for. I assumed it has some hidden meaning, but had no clue. Odin: That's a fair enough reason to use that name. I would have guessed you were just a mythology nerd like myself.

EEN: Is it okay to call you Nick or would you prefer EEN?
Everyone who was talking about naps: I took a nap today and felt horrible after. But come to think of it, I probably should've incorporated 'naps' into my screen name...cuz I take them a lot. DX

Hi, peoples!!
Um, let's see....my name, my name...well, actually, it's because I was trying to come up with a name and I misremembered the name of the manga-ka for the manga 'Ghost!'. (Her name is Shuri Shiozu, I must have mixed them up in my head and come up with Shiori.) And...I just like the 'tsu' sound. I looked it up later, and the translation I found said it meant 'storyweaver' so that was awesome.
I also have an alter-ego called Shintoki, but that was just made up from altering Shiori a bit. And it sounded cool. So....yeah. There you have it. XD

My name is intended to be a clever, double-edged sword (ha, okay, maybe not a sword). You can read it 'Doodles the Bear', as in a bear named Doodles, or 'doodles the bear', as in, 'she doodles the bear.' Which only works in present tense, but whatever. It just came to me one day. I also like to think it has good flow and the right number of syllables. It is also easily shortened to 'Doodles', which works pretty well for me, as I doodle. ^^

It's alien backwards. Long ago I wrote a story mostly for myself, that had a terrible Marysue character by the name of Neila, because I couldn't think of a name (and was terribly unoriginal) and she was supposed to be an alien, and so I just wrote Alien backwards to use as a place holder. I liked the way Neila sounded, and later found out its a real name. I started using the name online near the end of highschool. That old story is dead and gone, but one of the supporting characters is still around in my work.

Ah, an interesting thread, this one. Hopefully new members will post here too. The story behind my name can be traced back to one day long long ago when my dad brought home, for dinner, something called "seafood medley" It had pretty much all the bottom feeder stuff that they couldn't sell otherwise(or so I'm told), but it had more tentacles than I could count, and being the decidedly wacky kid I was, I ate it and ever since had a liking for seafood... except cooked fish. I never cared for fish sticks or fillets. Anyway, one day I was introduced to this new food that was supposedly extremely weird... Raw fish wrapped in rice wrapped in seaweed. And it was love at first bite (Hooray I get to use the pun in a way that makes sense). Now, the story doesn't stop there. No, truth be told, I regret using this username, and never really wanted to perpetuate its use. Now, I still love sushi and it's quite probably my favorite food, but it is not truly a defining characteristic of me as a person. The only reason I use it is because I've used it for so long and so many people know me as the1truesushiboy online already. If I could just rename all these accounts, I would, BUT most don't allow usernames 5 characters or smaller, so my optimal choice "Umbra" wouldn't be an all around username, which is rather upsetting, so I'm stuck with this. But, it's not as bad as it could be.
Side note- "Neila" was a possibility when I had initially decided on "the1truesushiboy", because at the time, I liked aliens and space and all that jazz. Now I'm obsessed with mythology. I still like sci-fi, but space travel no longer appeals to me as much.

As for my name, well, a couple years ago my friend was helping me set up my deviant art account. She asked me 'So, what do you want for your name?' I, unprepared, answered, 'I honestly don't know.' She typed it in, and it ended up as my screen name for DA. I ended up liking it so much that I've used it ever since. Personally, I think it's a funny name.
On a side note, I'm sort of obsessed with names and their meanings. It's amazing to realize that a series of sounds that we recognize as a 'name' actually has a meaning, just like words do.

Names and their meanings is somewhat of an interest of mine as well. My full name w/ two middle names translates as "Tumultuous-rock-rich(or blessed)guardian-Small wise one". Random trivia- Did you know that the name Daray is Celtic/Gaelic and means dark? Isn't that interesting... Intentional maybe? Or was that a street name too, I wonder? Oh, and check out my response to the name Charby here: amelius.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=ponderings&action=display&thread=232

Hm... where'd you find that out? Because I know that the name 'Ciaran' ALSO means 'black/dark' although 'Daray' might just mean 'dark'. (Ciaran is the male form of the name, and is pronounced 'Kee-ran')

I found it on the internet by chance, actually, but checked numerous other sites to back it up. It may be related to the name Darcy, also of Gaelic origin. My brother is named Kieran, being a variation of Ciaran, of course, so I knew that one already, but I actually know an extraordinary amount of names relating to darkness, black, shadow, night, etc. because I have an unnamed OC and I'm searching for something.

My name I guess is fairly unoriginal. I was IM'img my friend and we were both wearing pajama's. I told her mine were stripped and she was like 'I'm gonna call you Stripes!' and the name has just stuck for like three years now. I absolutely love the name and also stripe patterns. For the record, her name is Spots.
For a side note: I love looking up different names, especially for different characters of mine. My own name-first and middle, Simone Raven- means to listen and well a raven. I roughly like translating it to the listening raven which I've actually used in a role play before where a raven was used to listen in on someones conversation.

That's pretty cool. My name doesn't have much applicable use, although some of my OCs' names or traits are influenced by it, for example, a character of mine is named Drust Frode. He was born a viking, but through the events prior to the story, became immortal and as the years went on, he changed his name to the more modern versions of them to Tristan Frodelius (My name). It's cool, cause Drust and Frode were names used at the time and in the Scandinavian region. Hooray for historical accuracy!

Fallanfatasy174 and Nightspirit174 I both made up on the spot. Fallenfantasy has nothing to do with the webcomic of the same name, I found out about that after I started useing it. 174 comes from my old Neopets acount were it sugested a name ending in it. My real name means dream stone.

Well, I suppose I'll dust off this topic and see if I can't trick anyone into posting in here again. Some of the more observant might notice that I changed from username from Vagus to Waker. Waker itself doesn't mean anything, though I suppose one could interpret to mean "One who has waken from sleep" as opposed to a Sleeper or Dreamer. The only downside to this name is that everyone thinks I'm misspelling Walker.

Ah, the presumptions of others.... truly, it's a fascinating thing that they always think they know better than you. I have a similar problem with my given last name, as it's similar to a more common one. Very annoying.
In any case, my name has no real meaning associated with it.... Originally I was nightmanflock, and still am on many different things, but back in the day playing games on Starcraft I found someone who wanted me to join their guild of sorts and they offered the suggestion nightwing so I could incorporate their guild moniker into my screenname. I saw nothing wrong with it and there was no real significant meaning to my name, I'd simply been using it since I was about 10 or 12. So, nightwing, where it isn't taken already. If it is, I default back to nightmanflock. But given that I later found out that Nightwing was a comic book character, I went back to my old name in full, as it was A) almost always taken, and B) referred to a character I knew nothing about. Seemed off.
Apologies for rambling.

No need to apologize. I frequently find myself straying during conversations and especially when explaining a topic, though when typing I tend to be more succinct. The majority of my pseudonyms tend to come from aborted stories or are otherwise tangentially related to writing. For example, my previous name Vagus was/is something of a nom de plume, assuming I ever get around to finishing a story and publishing it. While this current name was intended to be a character for a Shadowrun game that never got off the ground.

Think I actually remembered that Vagus was a nom de plume of sorts.... did that come up earlier in this thread or something? Eh, I'll look myself a bit later on.
I'm somewhat the other way around.... I'm more to the point when I'm speaking than when I type, and often even find that I had more on my mind than I'd originally knew when typing something out that I likely never would have voiced. It's a bit off putting at times.
Never done a Shadowrun game, but I imagine it'd be quite entertaining, provided you had a good GM. Would be hard to do though, it seems... sucks when a campaign never takes off. I've had a handful that have been dropped before level 3 in Pathfinder.
Any further conversation along these lines though should probably move to the general discussion. If you're worried about a double post, you can just make an edit and I promise I'll check. Just don't want to derail the thread too horribly in case someone else wants to post here.

Omnomivore was a name for my character Endorphin's account when I was playing him on Insanejournal. I asked my wordsmith friend what would be a good journal name for a character whose main feature was eating anything and everything he could and... that's what I got XD. I liked it enough that I use it for a lot of my screennames now. Plurk, Flight Rising, etc.
My original account here, Daybreak, was named because... well, my first major (self insert) original character was named Daybreak. She was a horrific Mary Sue with a ludicrous and convoluted story (Dylan was from the same era) and... never quite followed me out of my early teens. But I still use the name a lot, as a bit of an homage, and its permutation Daysleeper. Which was also sort-of pulled from an REM song.
