So, maybe this is in the wrong place, or if it has been done before, I apologse, and it can be moved. Use this thred to post any books you have read and enjoyed, or tell us the ones to avoid! What compelled me to start this thred is my recent reading of the book: The Book of Dead Days by Marcus Sedgwick If anyone has read this book, did you find it as good as I did? Anyone else: read it! It is a fantasy book based in a city. "dead days" are the days between christmas and new year. The main character is a boy, called simply Boy. He works in a magic show with his master, Valerian. (Valerian is such a cool character.) Aww, Its hard to describe, wrting isnt my forte. www.randomhouse.com/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=9780385730556&view=excerptIts great! Read it!

I read a looot of books. Too many to pick some. What I can do, however, is list my favorite authors. Neil Stephenson: he is the Poet Laureate of hacker culture. If you want to be take for a ride, read Cryptonomicon, and then The Baroque Cycle. Anne Rice: The best occult writer of all time. We've lost her, though, to the scourge of born-again Christianity. Don't get me started. Tolkien: 'nuff said. Terry Goodkind: The best Fantasy since Tolkien, I swear. Michael Moorcock: As British as it gets, and about as psychotic, too.
I can expound upon any of the above if inquired.

Heh. I kinda got hooked on The Edge Chronicles. Maybe it doesn't quite live up to my age and/or reading ability, but it's a great series. I love the monsters and beasties!
*cough* This is what I get from working at a library. The Children's Room is corrupting me.

I can't really be specific with books, so can I say authors? In no particular order, I like Stephen King, Michael Crichton, T.A. Barron, K.A. Applegate, J.K. Rowling, Lemony Snicket, and Gordon Korman.

I like >.> <.< v.v graphic novels? I also like a bunch of the books priorly listed here! I currently have a college and up reading level (I took a test! weehee!), and I read Journey to the Center of the Earth (Jules Verne) in third grade, and understood it >_< But I have been sorely lacking in good reads lately. I need reccomendations!

I read the Dune series when I was five... And my teacher accused me of faking it, so I read the first two pages infront of the class... Ah, good times! ^^
I am a very booky person.

And I read LOTR in second grade. Don't you love those "why yes, I am smarter than you" moments? Shippo: I recommend Neal Stephenson's 'Cryptonomicon'. And if you haven't read Anne Rice's 'Vampire Chronicles', do so. Now.

To be honest, I love reading, yet am a slow reader. This is probably due to the fact that I used to hate reading. I think I first started to enjoy reading when I was 9 or 10. It was only when I started reading that my spelling and grammar improved dramatically, before, it was absolutely awful! Now, I love to read and write, I just take a little longer over books than others... ^_^ Gives my brain a chance to digest it thoroughly.

Gee... And I used to think I was the ultimate bookworm... Well, I guess I'll just have to read from my list of very impressive books. Midsummer Night's Dream(I LOVE THIS!!!!! Have you any idea how funny it is? ), of course the Lord of the Rings, Sherlocke Holmes, Heidi, the Little Princess, and my science book. Yes, my science book. It has a lot of hilarious pictures, and the articles are very well written. And I am in love with Artemis Fowl. If my love wasn't a very cute, short asian boy with a slightly foul mouth who wants to help me draw a comic, (SWOON!!!!) I would be obsessing over Artemis. *drools* But, aheheh, that is beside the point... OH!!! I LOVE The DragonRiders of Pern!!!!! That is one of my most favorite series ever. But what I'm currently working on is a series about a girl named Mary Russell, who falls apprentice to the legendary Sherlocke Holmes, now retired, and marries him. Yes, married. She's about 18 years old, pretty much a theatrical genius, and he's closing his fifties. A scary pair, but a beautifully done series.

Okay, I realize that this is a double post, but it's been a while since the last one, so it's okay, right?
I just finished reading a really, really good book. It's called Deerskin, and you guys should read it. It's really good. I've been reading it all day, and I'm all crossed-eyed from focasing close up for too long. And I can barely stop myself from re-reading it. But my friends don't share the same taste in books as I do, and I had to tell someone. I figured by putting it in this thread, someone might read it.

What is it about? Is it realistic-tastic?

Well, it's about this princess who looks like her mother, who was said to be the most beautiful woman in hte 7 kingdoms and...well, it's kinda hard to explain, but it is really good. There are dragons and a goddess in it...so, no, not really realistic.

Robin McKinley
Ok, here's what the back of the book reads: As Princess Lissar reaches womanhood, it is clear to all the kingdom that in her breathtaking beauty she is the mirror image of her mother, the queen. But this seeming blessing forces her to flee for safety from her fathers' wrath. With her loyal dog Ash at her side, Lissar unlocks a door to a world of magic, where she finds the key to her survival-and an adventure beyond her wildest dreams...

Blaaaaaaah. Smells all too much like Disney's squeeky clean stench. I myself prefer sarcastic princesses who realize that just because they're someone's daughter doesn't mean they have to rule the place, and girls who don't let their looks get in the way of their destiny. No offence whatsoever, but it just doesn't sound like my kind of book.

well, technically, she doesn't know she's a princess through most of the book. However, if you like sarcastic princesses, you might like the Enchanted Forest Chronicles. I can't remember who they're by, but the first one is Dealing with Dragons...I think. it's one of them, anyway. Another title from the series is Talking to Dragons. Those are really good too.

*laughter* Oh wow. I need to read those books again. The Enchanted Forest Chronicles enchanted me and made me laugh at the same time. For those who want to know, they are written by Patricia C. Wrede.
And Dundee, ^_^ You'll grow out of the sarcasm tastes eventually. Then you might want to try out Deerskin. (I know I will be. Thanks, wolfchild~!) Not every story containing a princess has a 'disney' feel to it. Actually, most of them don't. Disney has a unique 'flavor' of story-telling. (The original 'princess' tales from Disney are actually quite different from the way they were portrayed.)
