They confuse me, because it looks like the iris is where the pupil should be and the rest is black, like a variety of other animals' eyes. But why the coloured dot then? Wouldn't that block light?

I think it had to do with their shadow ability more than anything.

Haha, sorry I've taken a while to respond, I needed to compose an answer that didn't sound like bs Thanks for posting this here, Sushi! Ah, so it's the black sclera or somesuch that's confusing I takes it? The usually white part of the eye is black, and they have sorta holographic iris and pupils (I kinda based it a little on cat's pupils where they only look black when the light isn't directly on them, and they are even more reflective if the poor old kitty has cataracts). For a while I was indeed drawing the black pupils in, but ultimately I decided that kinda ruined the look of it a little and was too much like what other people were doing. I went back to the more subtle blue to pink gradient, which I liked better anyhow. Pretty much the colored part has both the iris and pupil in there, just with not much distinction between the two. Of course, in cartoonish fashion the iris' on all my characters contract. I'll not be a slave to anatomical correctness if it's way too subtle for the likes of me! Indeed, Lilac you are correct in identifying it has something to do with their shadow ability, it's too bad the rest of the Onekamari have kind of lost the art! Daray had a lot of time alone to study ancient Onekamari magics that have been mostly forgotten. This probably isn't a huge spoiler, but Onekamari can see incredibly well in the dark... which is pretty good for mining in dark tunnels and caves, I'd say! If not for the glowing holograms in the center, a shadowed Onekamari could be nearly invisible in the dark... that is, unless he can shadow his eyes over too... I hope that explains somewhat? If not, I'll get back in here and do it right!

Based off of cats eyes? No wonder I like them so much.
