I speak English. Okay, so that's a given. But in truth, English is my second language. My first language was Hebrew, which was understandable, since I grew up in Israel 'n' all. I actually liked the Hebrew language--it made a hell of a lot mores sense than English! (And it had less exceptions to EVERY FREAKIN' RULE, too.) Then, when I was nine, my dad decided his new cell phone distribution company would be better off in the U.S. of A., so we shipped out. I had ben learning rudimentary English in school, but I hadn't really paid attention (*hits self*) so I basically had to learn the entire language from scratch. It was NOT fun, double up on that NOT. But I got used to it, and eventually, what with everyone speaking English around me, I started to use English more than Hebrew. By the time I was eleven, I had trouble saying complex sentences in Hebrew, but I had a pretty damn good English vocabulary! I know about...mm...five words in Spanish, along with having the handy knowledge of Fangirl Japanese (along with one or two actual Japanese words that might help in real life, thanks to the fact that at least 75% of all my friends are at least Asian, if not Japanese). So...that's it! More than a bit pathetic, but I already knew that.

I gotta say that the signs downtown are frusterating as all getup. I mean I can sound out hirigana which in most cases means I can read half a word or somesuch. Thats because Kanji is everywhere.....Mostly as part of the entire word. So I can typicaly only read half a word if that. I do got to say I am getting better though. As I was wandering around downtown tokyo with a map I couldn't read I could have easily have shown the map to someone and said, "suimasen, koko doko desu ka?" Which, unless I am mistaken, is suppose to be "excuse me, where am I?" I could have also said, "shrine, dokodesuka?" But giving the name of the shrine...I forgot which one it was. :sweat: Hey I know it is not much, but it is a phrase entirely in Japanese. In case it seems that I only complain about Japan let me assure you that my complaints are only about being completely illiterate. ...er...and a little about being squished to pieces on an uber crouded subway. I love the people, my family is great, and even though Japan is expensive Stuff like Poky, milky's, calpis, Furikake, and any other treat is cheaper than the states and readily accessable....hurrah. Well back to studying. Later Daggertooth

Daggertooth, congratulations on those phrases ^_^... Even though you might have been a little lost. I am quite envious of you~! Wanna go to Japan~! X.x

ARGH! I have a hard time comprehending languages. I dont even think in english. Its all some kind of horrible mess in my brain and I can remember thoughts since before I could talk. The only language I was capable of learning was english and all other languages i've tried I have failed at. If I think too hard about english and how I comprehend what people say and how I communicate, I can freak myself out pretty bad. Its like it never completely sunk in as a mindset. I wont be able to remember what most of this stuff means so... I give up.

Domo arigatou gozaimasu, Ryo-sama! Ok. Now I won't sound like such an idiot!
I continue to work hard in my study of te Japanese language (aka listening to these tapes and watching subbed anime), and I know some stuff... I speak a considerable amount of Spanish as well, I can understand fluent speakers who are not talking to me directly ^__^;;;
And Rehiro-kun, don't give up! I'm sure that one day, you'll find a language that you feel comforatable with speaking (besides English) if you really try!!

Whew.....finished memorizing katakana in three days. Of course that means it will all be forgotten if I don't work it permanent the next few days. Got some nice flashcards made up and my uncle gots me started on some Kanji. Why on earth would a word need 18 strokes in kanji when you could easily just write two hirigana?
I have gotten decent actualy. Had my hirigana and katakana cards mixed up and my uncle went through them with me twice today. The second time he tossed the first card upside down...I tried to correct him and found he hadn't made a mistake. He made me go through it all upside down!! uggg....well thats how we learn...I think....

It is...but I am starting to like Katakana. Since there are alot of English words in Katakana, once I get the sounding out done I can actualy understand the word. I read a book yesterday. took me an hour and a half to read it. A childs book with 20 pages of text top to bottom, right to left. I have never been so exhausted by reading a book before in my life. uggg *goes back to sleep* I had my uncle sitting next to me helping me with pronunciation and meaning. If that doesn't make me feel like a three year old I don't know what will. Daggertooth

The book was itsunboshi. A childrens book my mom used to read to me when I was very little. It is about a boy the size of a pinkie and his adventures untill he saves a princess from oni and gets to wish to be big. Marries the princess and lives happily ever after. Sorry for the spoiler if you were going to read it. I will probably end up reading it over and over again untill I know what each word means and am able to go through it in less than an hour and a half. Daggertooth

Wow! What an undertaking! I recently overheard two Japanese kids at my school. And I heard over and over "Kippu hoshi desu" or "I desire a ticket" I COULDN'T UNDERSTAND ANYTHING ELSE! Well, bits and pieces. But one guy wanted a ticket.....

Languages I speak are French and English. But then I understand Korean too.
And I'm currently learning German. I took Latin for three years, however I was not very good at it.

I currently speak four languages, but there's a reason for every single one. I'm not really one to take up a language on my own accord.
German is my mothers tounge. I heard it's freakishly difficult to learn for everyone else. Since i began learning quite some time ago, i can tell you one thing: it really is freakishly difficult to learn. Most of us native speakers can't use the grammar correctly, so how could others? (I said 'began learning', because i'm still in the process of fine-tuning my german)
Then there's English. I wasn't really interested in learning English and had below average grades in school, but after finding out about webcomics (and spending a whole summer indoors because of that) my grades suddenly skyrocketed. Guess i learnt quite some things too.
I took Spanish courses in school and besides school because part of my family speaks Spanish and we sometimes spend our holidays in Argentinia. Because of these i can understand Spanish just fine, but can't speak more than half a sentence without using hands and/or feet.
And i can speak a bit French too. I had four years French in school and forgot most of it by now. But i think if i wanted to relearn it, i wouldn't have that much problems. Let's says i could survive if someone left set me out somewhere in France.

I can make myself mostly understood in French, I can barely get by in Japanese and I'm trying to teach myself German, Spanish and Arabic right now. Also on the To-Do list is Greek and Latin.
