Yeah, another board from me. Big suprise.
But, I'm actually kind of worried. Kavonn will be leaving soon, leaving Yiska. Don't get me wrong, Yiska's awesome. But here's the thing that's worrying me. In the past, there have been incidents where Kavonn stepped in and played a big role in saving peoples' butts at that cabin when things go haywire. I just don't know if Yiska has that power. I'm sure she's a super agent and all, but when it comes to some of the things needed to keep the powerful troublemakers in that cabin from wreaking more havoc... I just don't know.

Indeed. We shall see, though, won't we? Maybe her alp skills are far more than we'd suspect? Or maybe Mye's regained power will balance it out. Perhaps things will just go utterly awry.

Yeah, it takes someone with pretty good brainpower to keep evil Charby under wraps, although Hex is almost as good. That said, besides being a target, Yiska could transform small like Azelea and she could also mist into his mind. Although that might not have the desired result.

Ooh, I wonder what Charby's mind looks like. Thinking about it, I have no idea. Maybe something that would give him a sense of importance.

WEll charby's evil side is mentally very weak and Alps specialize in mental magic as well as transformational so there is that. However Yiska is meant to be an observer more than a super duper fixer really. but she's already shown though her familiars that she's more than capable of magics that we are not aware of.

Yiska doesn't seem like the type to stay purely an observer of her own volition for too long. And being from the bureau, she's undoubtedly got a lot up her sleeve, so to speak. She may yet surprise us with a display of magic that rivals that of the more talented mages among the cast.

Evil Charby is not really mentally weak, more... unbalanced. He is a shrewed, ruthless plotter and demonstrated his ability to plan well ahead when he was locked in the basement with Mye, the weakness comes in that he is so single-minded. While his methods are highly unpredictable his intent and target isn't. To control him you have to either be very quick off the starting blocks or tempt him with what he wants. Carefully.

He may be more powerful physically, but... Kavonn said that in that state his mind is rather easy to manipulate.

|
Post by ihonestlydontknow on Feb 12, 2011 17:17:22 GMT -5
That may be true, but even if you can manipulate him, I don't see Evil Charby being manipulated into just sitting down and watching TV. And I don't think Yiska is planning to be mearly an observer. That would be boring!
Soon that plot thread with Zeno is going to have to be resolved one way or another. I mean, the guy's got some kind of specter lecturing him... that's not a good sign! That's going to be a tough confrontation to go through. Zeno's got a lot of power with that scythe, and he's gunning for Charby (however reluctantly). It's gonna get messy in that cabin.

Another thing to consider is that the more Charby uses that form, the more control he'll get over it, so it might mean much more magical might is needed to manage mental manipulation to master his maniacally malicious mode. As is, I think if an alp were to enter his mind, they would not find it a pleasant place to be, but may find themselves able to subdue him. As for the plot with Zeno, I'm not hoping it gets resolved any faster than it need be. Sure, I want to know how it turns out, but it's the journey and mystery that I enjoy. I like stories that are immersive and that make me think heavily about the world I'm being told about. Very few stories I find as enthralling as CTV. Like... maybe five...ish. Not that I'm picky or don't enjoy other books, tv shows, movies, comics, webcomics, video games, and whatnot, but for some reason, I'm only really engaged by an extraordinarily small selection of... wait... I'm digressing... again. Ok, so my point is that I'm in no rush to see the resolution of these key plot points. Now I shall post this before I think of anything else to say.

*sigh* And here's where my attention to trivial details and rabid fan come out. Kavonn- "We were fortunate enough that since you cannot control your powers yet, your mind was susceptible to my magic." If you'd like context, here's the page- www.drunkduck.com/Charby_the_Vampirate/index.php?p=28817

@odin: Well, I don't know if he knows this, or if he does how he found out, but we do know that the Elites are keeping Quixoto because he's supposed to help Charby control his powers. Not to mention that the Elites have 'records' and 'prophesies'. He could have had access to those at some point. And, it might be partially assumption on his part. Usually when one has an abilitiy, one can in time, eventually control it. Usually. Kavonn probably knows about the abilities of other Elites and is basing his assumptions on that, too.
@ nightreflection As I said in the above block of text, the Elites are keeping Q alive because he'll supposedly help Charby control his powers. Since the real difference in power between Charby and the other Elites seems to be the power that the staff of Oswego gives him, I'm assuming that those are the powers they want Q to help Charby with. Cuz otherwise they could just have one of the Council teach him, right?
And re: Zeno. I agree with sushiboy; the story shouldn't be rushed. However, we still don't know how long before the clash with the spirit-thing starts, and we also don't know how long Kavonn will be gone from the cabin. It's got to be pretty long, since he has dissappeared from time to time for a while before, and hasn't called in any replacements. So we could be in for the long haul with Yiska. Again, not that I don't like her, I'm just worried about how well she'll be able to keep things under control. Kavonn does come in handy with the last minute rescues, and he is pretty powerful, I'm sure. I think most of my trepidation comes from attitude that the demon hunters have toward alps. They don't seem to see them as much of a threat. This is translating to 'oh man, Yiska might get in trouble' in my head. Heh, while I am worried for those in the cabin, I'm also excited to see how this will play out! -rubs hands together in feindish glee (yet again!)- I'm sure that it's gonna be fun.

Ah, yes. Quixoto's purpose to the elites slipped my mind(though there is evidently much more to it than that). My reason was far more obscure.
My only worry about Kavonn's leaving the cabin is whether his ventures will be followed alongside the main plot, if we'll only be hearing from him only secondhand, or if we'll only see him again when he returns. I'm assuming it is the first of the three, but I can see the possibility of the other two for plot related reasons.
Whoa there. That feindish glees stuff's dangerous. You need to be more careful with it, let alone rub your hands together in it.

Hmm.. didn't notice that, thanks for mentioning it Sushiboy. Still not convinced though. I imagine in that form his dark side will always be there tempting him. I wonder if it will just be temptation or it will manifest and become a bit like Zeno's tormentor.

I doubt Charby will be developing his own wraith, though the possibility can not be ignored. I think he'll be the same as he is now (in demon form), but get less weak, mentally.

The temptation will always be there, true. If the staff is actually WILLING Charby to use it, than the chances of some kind of personification of the staff increase. If not, than it's just there, in the back of his mind. I'm not actually sure how much Charby actually wants power now. Before, he probably got a huge rush off of being able to fight back against his pirate tormenters for the first time, but now he seems content, you know?

A notable similarity between these young immortals is their restraint in use of power. Most notable in Kavonn, but you're right. Chraby may be a bit of a show off, but he doesn't try to get more out of life than simple pleasures and friendship. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that they're still kids to a degree. I'm always fascinated by the portrayal of immortals. I've seen suicidal, cold and emotionless, thrill seeking, but to voluntarily live a normal life(normal being rather relative; in this case, especially), without making a big deal of the immortality, that's something rather uncommon. Granted, they're getting into the adventure and all that, but the contentedness with simplicity, and in fact opposition of Charby to the elites' plans is a fun view of what an immortal might do with their time.

It is indeed an interesting new angle you don't really see in immortals. Usually, they're either not human and have never been, or they have some serious issues in their past. It makes me wonder about how a formerly human mind would cope with mortality, like vampires. How human are they? I mean, when it comes to social and emotional needs. A human deprived of interaction becomes a sad sight, indeed. Are vampires still social creatures? Judging from the fact that the regular vampires actually have a court where they regularly gather in numbers large enough to warrent government, and have done so long enough to lead to a dynasty, yes. But then what about Elites? The larges group we know of is the Pertrucci family, but that's a small group of vampries, compared to the court. Charby doesn't seem bothered one way or the other. He can live comfortably in a cabin with 15+ cabinmates, or by himself for centuries, though he does seem to be drawn to civilization, and company. Remember his first girlfriend? Not to mention, we don't know how much time he spent with King Samricke and his court.
[rant edited for length and for want of a single topic] (Seriously, I have a lot of 'I wonder's regaurding Charby and the rest of them in this, and similar veins. It gets complicated, and long, and off topic.)

I was just about to start typing, but then "OH HEY! SQUIRT!" pops into my head. It's a soda, btw. Just thought I'd share that randomness, because my lunacy serves no purpose if not shared.
ANYWAY... that's a good point. Vampires are naturally restricted in their social interaction, but I don't think it's a huge issue for them. They've got hangouts and whatnot. Charby seems to, at least in the past, have known a group of vampires(the ones that melted). It is a kingdom, after all. But the psychological effects of immortality could vary drastically from person to person. This is something I've thought heavily about, since many OCs of mine are made immortal through various means, but I won't stray off topic. It's just something that I'm fascinated by. How would I or you handle it? What would we do with our free time? Depending on the nature of the immortality, there would be no need for many of the human comforts we've grown accustomed to. Given enough time, would one ever reach a point at which they'd be the same person no matter how much time passes from then on? The philosophy is immense, but it makes me wonder... Charby changed in one night from being the victim to who he is now. As a pirate, he was immensely humble, even if he harbored resentment and malicious thoughts towards the rest of the crew. Despite his desensitization towards violence, his humility seems all but gone, save for very few instances. Is that from the psychological effect of having the power he now does, or is it a part of the transformation? How much of him was changed, beyond his physical body?

Charby seems to have picked up a lot of Samrick's cheekiness. The king himself is a lot more homely and comes across as rather happy-go-lucky, hoewever he still has a serious agenda beneath that. I'm not sure if it's intentional, but Charby exhibits a similar casualness about life, although he can get serious when he wants. Although, unlike Samrick, he hasn't shown any signs of plotting. I'd like to see him pull of an elaborate, underhanded, sneaky plan, but I think that may not fit his personality. That said, I think a lot of Charby's current attitude was influenced by when Amy was doing the early random episodes. I imagine he would have ended up a lot darker if Amy hadn't spent time establishing a more 'fun' image of him in her mind.

Yes, Charby doesn't seem like a schemer. A spur of the moment ruse is more his style. It's likely that he was influenced into who he now is by Samrick and other demons he would have been acquainted with. And I do believe you're right about the "fun-ness" influencing him as he is now, but I believe there'd still be that black humor I love so much. It just wouldn't be CTV without that distinctive balance of dark and light tones that it has.

One of the reasons I like CTV so much is that it does have a nice balance of dark/light/humor. It's not just sociopathic fun, we are actually getting looks into how such events impact the characters. It's good writing. Amy realizes that there are reasons and reactions to the way people act, and she uses them accordingly.
