"In the ground, beneath you."

Ness blinked. "Why are you in the ground?"

The voice sighed, then two clawed paws tunneled up from the ground. A rabbit-like creature's head appeared, and it pulled itself out of the earth. Except for the sliver of a gem in its forehead and the large pure black eyes, it appeared to be maybe entirely of sand.
"Because I am part of the ground," the creature answered, looking down at itself.

Ness blinked. "Wow." She said, squatting in front of it.

The creature tilted its head, ears twitching back.
"... I am Sliver." it said after a moment.

"Sliver, huh? I'm called Ness." Ness asked, reaching a hand out to poke it.

Sliver melted back into the ground, avoiding the poke.

"... Hey." She pouted.

"I'm Bill, and for now I'm her travelling companion. I have to make sure she doesn't absentmindedly step into a mutant's mouth or jump off a cliff to see if she can fly."

"Hey!" She said again, hand on hips.

"I have seen no evidence that she has more sense than that," he told the rabbit-thing.

Ness's pout quivered and she turned her back on him, sitting on the ground.

Sliver reformed, scratching at one of its ears with a hind leg.
"I see. Harsh on the girl," it observed dispassionately.

"Truth hurts," he said coldly.

Ness suddenly turned around, rock in hand, and threw it, right at his head. "Why are you so mean to me?!"

He batted it out of the air. "I am not mean. I am totally dedicated to my own survival with minimum loss of other people's lives. Currently, I am trying to show you how desperately incapable you are."

"Shut up!" She said, furiously. "I may not remember what happened, heck, I don't want to remember! I can take care a'myself though. I haven't died yet and I know how to keep safe. You don't need to pick at me."

"Okay then," he said, mildly affronted. "I'll be getting some food then. You may have some if you wish."

She just sat back on the ground, turned away from him, hugging her knees and rocking.

He came back with a few fish that were still edible. He bent over and wordlessly began making a fire. "In the interest of time, could you sharpen a skewer?" he asked, tossing a stick and a pocketknife at her. "Careful with the knife, it can cut steel. Skin is no problem."

Ness stares at it then wordlessly took it and started sharpening the stick, without looking at him.

"Thank you," he said, pulling another knife and whacking the fish in the head to kill it. Another knife stripped the scales, and Bill made a slit along the belly.

Ness completely ignored him, sharpening the stick silently and still facing away.

He took some sticks and set them up over the fire. "May I have the skewer, please?" he asked, slitting some fruits into the belly of the fish and tossing the guts in the fire.

She sighed and tossed it over her shoulder.

He caught it and thanked her again. The fish went on the stick and over the fire, and before long they were sizzling cheerfully.

Ness was still just facing out towards the woods. She mumbled something incoherent under her breath.

"Is anything wrong?" he asked, handing her a fish.

sliver reformed, idly scratching it's ear with a back paw.
"I would imagine it's how you treated her," it commented, hopping closer to the fire experimentally.

Ness took the fish, still not saying anything, though she was watching Sliver curiously.
