A jumbled rambling of inquiry:
How many ways can an alp come to be? For example, can alps have alp children, or are they exclusively created from death? If alps come from death, can an adult die and become a full alp, as opposed to a "were-alp", speaking of which, how do they exist differently from a normal alp? Alps, of course, don't turn humans, but they are revanants like vampires, so are alps, in any way, a creature in their own right or are they specifically something of a "magical mutation" from death, almost like human-spawned vampires? If alps originated from elfs in their mythology, would there be "pure blood" alps and can creatures other than humans become one? Apparently a witch can summon an alp, but does that mean she "creates" it in some way or does she simply call a preexisting alp to her. How does the horerczy fit into its creation?

The Horerczy is something I've done quite a bit of research on and turned up very little. Horerczy's have the ability to store butterfly alps in their bodies and release them to steal the breath of their victims. I honestly expect them to be a kind of elder alp or something. www.bloodylexicon.com/?s=horerczyAs for why alps have a white butterfly form. I would say it has something to do with a white species of butterfly the spawn near the Alps (the mountain range). It's supposed to be a -puts on sunglasses- breathtaking view.

I would guess Horerczy's are a kind of evolved alp or something to that effect.

It's possible, My initial thought was some sort of symbiotic relationship.

Sure alps collect the breath for the Horerczy and the Horerczy allows them to live.

Well yeah, but why would an "evolved" alp be in that situation? And why would the alps do it willingly(if it is willingly)?

I think that the alps the horerczy breaths are a different type of alp than our nightmare inducing friends.

That seems probable. But who knows? I just wish humankind took more interest in uncovering and preserving these old myths.

Yeah, there's a lot I'd love to learn. But in the meantime, I'll have to rely on Amelius for any alp related questions, 'cause she's already dedicated to uncovering the folklore.

Aye. Amelia has uncovered quite a bit. I wish I could get in touch with my German teacher I have a lot of questions concerning Alps I'd like to ask her. She was from South Germany.

I have family in Germany. Unfortunately, it's a might bit difficult to contact them. I've tried to see about good source material, but to no avail.

But I'm still trying. I can't help but be intrigued enough to do independent research, although since Amy's done all I would manage anyway, I'm looking for more "original" information, if possible. It's a harrowing task that has produced few results, none satisfying.

Getting laconic with the responses there. Though the conversation's run dry, as it were.
I wonder if Amy has the answers to my questions. Mainly, I'm curious as to whether there can be full alps from a dead adult. The other questions I'm still curious about, but a tad less so.

I would think not. Adults may be cursed but their true birth seems to be in the form of miscarriage.

The reason I wonder is that the wikipedia article doesn't specify whether that is the case or not. It says "dead relatives" and then goes on into explaining about infants becoming alps.

Indeed, hence my curiosity on the issue. I'm working on developing my own alp character. I'd prefer him tall, but would rather have him not break any rules (or have an unusual reason for his height). I'd like to stay with the traditional lore. I just don't know what it is in this regard.

Traditionally full grown alps are a child's size. There are alps that break this rule -cough- Poldi -cough- but it isn't truly iron clad as an alp can change their height at will anyways if they prefer themselves tall. Useful for chekhov's gun type scenarios and it creates a neato weakness for the character preventing mary sueness.
